Moisture will ruin your drone electronics. If you fly in wet environments, you need to waterproof your drone. The usual way of doing it is with silicone conformal coating. But there’s a new product, Drone Dry, which is better than conformal coating in some ways. Let’s compare the two and learn which is the best way to waterproof your quadcopter.

You demoed the shake – what about the bake??
I was hopeing to see it actually in action or in some water haha but good to know thanks
Love Shake & Bake. Mom used to make chicken with it back in the days 😂😂😂
Please tell me you were referencing Futurama when you said “it tastes purple”?? Haha.. good stuff.
Josh, nice to see you do a video on waterproofing. When I run out of the bottle I have, I might check out drydrone 😉 I live in the Pacific Northwest, where it is always wet and have been using MG Chemicals Silicone conformal coating for years. If I ever got it on a plug, I would hit it with a micro torch which is also my soldering iron. Then it’s good to go. A little goes a long ways so a bottle will last most are lifetime, lol. Thanks for the video bro!
I had problems (i think it caused a short but IDK for sure) with dry drone plus it leaves a ugly yellow urine like color to everything. Bit I had trouble recently with conformal coat wicking too fast and getting into connectors. So I got a few bottles of nail polish remover (acetone) and a nice set of small paint brushes to use with conformal coat problems. Acetone cleans up the conformal coat nicely even in a micro usb or a ESC connector. I also cannot see the dry drone with a UV / pet urine flashlight. MG Chemicals Silicon Conformal Coat is best but Dry Drone is handy for stuff like the VTX where much is inside the shield. If it wouldn’t color everything yellow and was visible with a UV light, it would be great.
Joshua, I’ve used conformed coating on all my electrical components with great success! I heard you say how it can interfere with electrical conduction and I partially disagree. Yes, you must not get conformal coating on the USB port of F.C. or it will interfere with the usb functioning properly but I have put the coating on 100% of of the electrical components except the USB port and bind button everything else is game. In my 4 years of flying Fpv the worst thing that has happened is the quad somehow did short out and once I put a hairdryer to the components the quad was up and flying within minutes! Conformal coating is tried and true!
I want to see some drew testing cuz he flies in snow a lot
You forgot to test. Lol
I am using that mg chemicals stuff. Tested it in some very low hanging clouds. no problems after 20 minutes of flying. Quad was completely wet after landing and the props flung a lot of water and even ice from the cloud into the camera and stack. All good. Was awesome! Clouds were at 2-300ft AGL.
sooo much preamble , get to the point already
I had to buy spray coating (it is also comes in liquid but used for dipping and spraying), and I also bought some conformal coating masking to cover plugs and holes, but paint masking tape is standard.
The coating had a long drytime and has to be baked in the oven at a low temperature for some hours, you decide yourself what level of protection you want. Example for high chemical resistance you needed to airdry for 12 hours and then 12 hours in the oven at 120 Celsius.
I would buy the shake and bake you showed for the flight controller and use simple brush conformal coating on the ESC’s.
I opened up my camera, and on mine there is a IR filter glued on the sensor (I guess), maybe the shake and bake would not get in between the sensor and filter. Don’t know how the stuff reacts on tape either. But you have the brush!
To clean the sensor for dust you would be best to buy the one time use brush cleaners on ebay, buy two different brands to be sure you get one that works.
$39.99?? Or you can get a free 2oz sample of “Novec 2708” from 3m
Are there any non-sketchy sites selling this?
Not with any water proofing I crashed into a pond.. Found it on the bottom still plugged in 20 mins later. Pulled the plug. Let it sit over night. With the bardwell f4 v1, wraith32, and emax 2205s. Everything still works still to this day..
They both not for me, i like to use a brush and do it really clean, mgchemicals also dry to fast for my taste and it comes of by first crash 😀 I use some special stuff comming from the train industry, this stuff is great (only needs really long to dry out but then it is super save and will only come off with a lot of alkohol but you can solder and reapply it just like mgchemicals) never had an issue with it, it even protect from acid as far as i know 😉 I think it called electrolube…..
Awesome T shirt
You big Hydrofoob
and then there is this…
Watched this just after my quad crashed into a big pond, completely submerged for 1 min. Battery was still connected and nothing was on on the quad. dried it out for 24 hours and a bit of clean. All G! Up and flying again.
All I had done prior was spray some circuit board lacquer on when I built it.
I am not paying for 15 – 20 dollar shipping for the conformal coating!
Your using the wrong stuff. We use a spray which you can use in the motors, usb port, on buttons and will not effect any electrical component. Build quad, spray, leave for 10 mins and fly. done!!!! message me if you want some to review. Much luv Slider
Why didn’t you pour some water on your board????
I love this guy
LOL the comments are fantastic, come on guy buy the shake a bake, lol
I used spray on conformal. All good if you have a deft hand and plug in the plugs your worried about before hand if you have to .
Is it a usual anti rain spray for car glasses?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but a motor should be naturally waterproof correct? So they shouldn’t be any issue? Also, what about waterproofing the camera from outside the case, just put coating over the whole thing but the lenses?
