I had enough clips to illustrate my drone experience almost from the beginning in 2014. I though you folks might enjoy seeing some of the mistakes and minor successes of my flying .

ya sounds like papa my grandfather
I notice some video nearly above the train, like the Plant City shot. Is there any concern about the heat from the engine exhaust affecting the flying or the camera?
awesome!
Great stuff, Danny. Always love the drone shots, but, I think I’ll stick to a tripod mounted camera for now. Taking stills and video is enough to keep me content, LOL! Keep up the stellar work!
A learning curve for sure.
Great video Danny!
Very interesting.
Pretty cool intro
I would love to have a drone, but with cost and seeing other’s videos and how much trouble they can be I’m not sure if it’s worth it.
Dji Mavocs are very nice drones Danny you are lucky we can’t even afford one
Well, I had no idea how freaking difficult it is. Here’s one of my favorite YouTube vids with drone work. Background music, narration, flawless drone work, incredible editing with music timed to the video at 3:35 and 3:45 perfectly… Your video has made me appreciate this video even more. Thank you!!
Remembering when we posted of battery failure not that many years back with the second bird. The third and newest I’m not aware of and will have to look at that one for features. And thanks as always sir!
Thanks for that. Always wondered about the drones.
Thank You Danny for sharing the nuances of taking drone video footage. This definitely gives your subscribers a bird’s eye perspective. By the way, the Tampa Bay TV media market might hire you, or should I say rehire you. If not mistaken, when I lived in Winter Haven in the 1980s, I believe you did the voice over for WFLA-8. Could be wrong since I was just a high school student who loved watching trains in my early years. Happy Railfanning and looking forward to seeing more drone footage. 🙂
I’m still waiting to see a drone railfanner sneeze, which causes the drone to go DOWN, and have the drone get crashed into by an AC4400, or for the drone to drop into an empty coal hopper, never to be seen again.
Excellent drone videos Danny!!
I would think power lines would be a concern as well.
awesome video!!
Nice video. Very well done and very professional.
Somewhere in the vast LA metro while sitting in a siding waiting for the Commuters to finish, we hear over the radio of an Amtrak Surfliner smacking a drone to pieces at track speed. Apparently, the guy was flying it around the opening of a tunnel lol Oh well.
Wow Danny, very cool. That’s the 1st time i have seen an Advance Approach at SE Lacoochee pass on the main. SCL Pete SCL Trainman ID#175866.
Hahaha. Thanks for sharing your drone blooper footage with us Danny and say hi to Travis for me.
Are you gonna be up in Tallahassee this Saturday for the train show?
Last of them Seaboard signals. I caught the ACL and Southern signals in Cordele, GA about a week before they where replaced. The old Southern bridge signal in Cordele still stands as does a few Southern signals in Sparks, GA that are still guarding the old Albany to Sparks Southern now GFRR line. I’m fortunate enough to have video and pictures of these now obsolete signals. Nice video.
Try drone racing it is d.r.l
when you’re flying the drone pan with the train it will look a lot better. it looks as if you are scared to fly when the train rolls through because your movements show it. keep it up..
how much cost for a set up like that ?
Danny, I think there is at least one more set of former Seaboard signals on the S Line just north of Route 42 at Dallas. I assume this because there are two southbound signals together on the right side of the ROW which you have said is a unique Seaboard practice.
This gives me flashbacks to the time I was stupid enough to start up a drone right outside my apartment. I got too excited and enedee you crashing it into shrubs and a concrete pillar. #NeverAgain that traumatized me.
Love the narration, its the as the one in a documentary I got about folkston
Danny I’m a conductor retired on the old Chicago and Northwestern love your videos Work the road work the yard work passenger retired from Passenger 43 years You have a great speaking voice and you take great pictures good job I sure do miss it also in my layovers I was a professional magician You have no idea how thrill I was to see these pictures again great job
Yet another good vid Danny! Isn’t The NO-20 Coal Train the one handed off to FNOR near Crystal River, FL? At least yours is a computer! Not a fellow Railbuff who just HAD to get a few photos of a passing CSXT train underneath I-75 heading back towards AL in Valdosta, GA, & STOPPED in the MIDDLE of the INTERSTATE ( luckly as you stated, but worse, no COPS )! LOL!
This was a great instructional video, thank so much for sharing.
Thanks for all your mistakes, I may will make them [LOL] with my new drone
The quality on the new drone looks a lot better to me!
I’ll just keep rail fanning from my lazy boy.
Superb videos.
When mom makes you a low calorie breakfast
if someone was flying their drone and it ran out of power and landed in the middle of the track and the train hit it

How difficult is it to mix lineside audio with footage from the drone
Does this work require a Part 107 license? I’m assuming it would. You seem to be very professional in your work, so I wouldn’t doubt you have full credentials.

Nice
How can I know of a locomotive is ex-conrail
Your not supposed to fly drones over rail yards unless you have permission from the railroad.
Your not supposed to fly drones over rail yards unless you have permission from the railroad.
And to think that I’m nervous about taking-off/landing in a jet airliner! LOL!! Thanks for sharing your railfanning mis-adventures.
You have to watch that exhaust. I can’t even think about getting those drones but I have one with GPS and self landing plus other stuff. Trains are part of the reason I fly.
Honestly, and this is just my opinion, I’m fine with ground shots…I prefer them because they’re “safer” to an extent. I haven’t yet experienced with bridge shots, but I could probably make good with one of those too… I’m just not really into drones… I like ground shots of trains better.
A drone would come in handy to get places like Union Pacific’s Albina Yard…its huge, and literally hugs the Willamette river in Portland…Also BNSF’s Vancouver yard…mains on either side of the yard, and it stretches a few miles or so…other than yards…not really an interest of mine…
Edit: Great montage!!
Danny, while I respect your self criticism about crossing the 2-track main to retrieve your drone, you are still way more qualified and safety conscious than the average rail trespasser. As a railroader, your attitude is refreshing.
Still waiting on the day I can use a drone to railfan, I have to get my Nikon fixed.
L?L
Hey Danny, where you at Folkston on 7/1/2018? When Amtrak went by? For some reason I thought it was you I saw…
This is one of my favorite videos
Your speaking voice is still better then your drone shots, so far! When I 1st stumbled on your videos I thought you were part of the railroads PR team…professional sounding voice overs will win the day each time.
You mention getting time tables for lines that you monitor. Any ideas on where to pick them up, particularly UP in the East Texas area.
This maybe a question already asked. I did look, but I did not see any. Has anybody ever encountered Railroad or any other Police telling you not to video the trains? Any help or hints to not get in trouble?
3:48 – that’s my weekend railfanning spot, friends house is to he left
Is there a good railfan drone for less? I have a DJI Tello, but it glitches a lot. Is there something I could get for around $500 and still film fast trains?
Ahhhh. How I wish I’d had a drone 25 years ago while able to get out and take pictures. Thanks.
Danny anyone who doesn’t like
You’re videos is not a true
Railroad enthusiast
Greetings from Ceader hill Connecticut
Drones + Trains…. Match made in heaven!! I love the Tello for railfanning its like a flea compared to a train 🙂

I love GoPro drone shots….the field of depth experience is wonderful…. Thanks
*Drone falls into coal hopper going to Kentucky*
Thats a great idea. I have to stand on a bridge to get an aerial view. Have you ever made a video on railway radio traffic. The jargon is confusing. I live in Ga. And I make some videos of CSX trains. I scan them, but its Greek to me some of the things that are said. If you have a chance one day consider making a video on that. Thanks for your informative videos.
Great video.
A bit surprised that it is legal to fly these over railyards.
At 4:05 that isn’t bad quality IMO. I have shot way worse quality (I don’t have a drone though)
That overcast evening may not have been great for photography but it does offer a useful reference for modeling grade crossings!
*Drone falls into coal hopper going to Kentucky*
Its been said before but Great job Danny .
I’m not really a rail fan myself, or at least not to this extent, but I find rail fan videos relaxing. And yours are by far the best I’ve found. Your camera work, editing, and voice overs with extra information are superb. Thank you.
Ha ha that’s great stuff! I have flown multicopters for years along with all other rc vehicles! I am am aerial photographer now but I can sit hear and smile. Because when I first got into the multicopters you had to build it and software PID adjustments for the quad to fly right. So many attempts and ooopsys?
This is the drone i have been looking at:
3:39 Lacoochie?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I hope you can give me some advice. I do more ship spotting than railfanning these days. Most of my videos are from a spot on land but I have folks who will take me out on a boat. I have found the video from a camera held on a boat unsatisfactory and have been considering getting a drone to as near as duplicate as possible my land side video while still doing still photos with my DSLR. Do you feel it is safe/makes sense to “park” a drone in the air to let a ship pass by for video while I do still photos from the camera? Thanks and love your videos!
Have you seen these drone video yet? It includes flying under a moving freight train and other acrobatics – MUST WATCH!!!!
Live and learn, the real university of life.

Your mother told you there would be days… Thanks.
Went to like… *already liked*
In my backyard, this is Danny Harmon, out. ?
Hi I enjoy your footage while your filming with a drone, have you ever been told your not allowed to film near or over the tracks? Have you checked to see if there are any rules about filming on rail road property with a drone? Thanks Danny! ?
Danny, Enjoyed the video Have you updated the Mavic PRO. ? Thanks
It kinda sucks that your earlier drones you used didn’t work as usual.
Great railfan drone video shots, of course, also considering you like to focus on the production instead of worrying about pilot issues, you might enjoy a yuneech hexacopter drone. You could program in your ATCS gps info and tell the drone to fly the course over the target track and return. Freeing you of many piloting issues
Lol. Danny, that’s about my luck on drones. Except you are much better than I am. lol. Lots of fun though. I really enjoyed the video. Thanks ???❤️
Drones for DUMMIES”
Just as a side-note: please don’t do balloon releases. That’s rather nasty littering, and is extremely dangerous for wildlife.
What are the limitations on drones (other than obviously near airports) that you’re under, and have you talked to the rail companies to get some kind of permission in certain circumstances to use a drone—you mentioned on a couple videos you couldn’t or didn’t want to fly over some sidings and such?
