A video for all NZers who want to have some fun racing FPV mini-quadcopters (and no, MFNZ membership is NOT required – or even preferred ;-).
Here in Tokoroa, the Forest Fliers are keen to set up a few familiarisation days and races to help get folk into the mini-quad scene and have a whole heap of fun.
Drop me a line if you’re interested and even if you’re not within spitting distance of Tokoroa but might want to come out to NZ during our summer, let me know and we’ll try to tee up some meetings where you can join in.
I’ve got a few spare “ready to fly” mini-quadcopters and RC/FPV setups available to lend to those who just want to come and fly — so what’s stopping you?
I would be keen just building black out mini quadcopter at moment.
I would love to head down under and over to NZ to join you guys for a
couple of days!
Count me in!
I just watched your latest video… damn… I’ll never win any races if
everyone else is half as fast as you 🙂 But seriously, we’d be glad to
have you come down and join in.
Hi Bruce
I was wondering when you will do the review on the Chinese mini quad. I
know that it doesn’t compare with the black out but is it that much worse.
The Blackout is a lot of money.
keep the videos coming and have fun
Zach
Part 1 of that review is uploading to the RCModelReviews channel now. I do
a build of the chinese frame and compare it to the QAV250 and Blackout.
It’ll probably be a few hours before the upload completes (damned slow
internet) so if it’s not done by the time I go to bed, I’ll publish it
first thing tomorrow morning.
Hi Bruce, Im keen as. It’s a bit of a trip for me but it will be worth it.

Love your vids man! Excellent stuff.
+xjet ThX xjet 🙂
Glad you like iT .. very nice to hear that from you 😉
I’ll be up for that, another Jafa. :)
Send me a message through YouTube with your email address and I’ll keep you
up to date with what’s being organised.
I would come down Bruce, but I’m in Pukekohe so its a bit hard :-(
A few other Jafas have mentioned they might come down so perhaps you could
grab a ride with one of them. Send me your email via YouTube messaging
and I’ll keep you informed as to arrangements are eventually made for some
racing and general miniquad fun.
+xjet OK sweet, I will teach myself how to do that and get back to you 😉
Firstly I’m in chch and i don’t have one what about rc plane races?
I’d definitely be there. Great idea
Well, this is a pretty good reason to visit NZ (I am in Perth WA) with my
mini tri !
Looks like a lot of fun. I’ll be tuned in to watch your coverage.
Sorry Bruce, I won’t be able to make it. I will be able to watch the videos
though here in UK.
250 racing is the future Bruce can’t wait to see some footage of your race
meet. Wish i could be there……..I’m off to see how much a flight will
be to NZ :0)
I’m thinking of having a chat to some TV producer friends and see if they
might be interested in doing a bit of a “reality” doco on the rapidly
rising cult of the 250. Maybe they could sponsor a few plane flights to
get a keen group of internationals together for some racing. Stay tuned 🙂

Ditto mate: Scrap Heap Challenge part 1.
One of my favourite shows growing up… just watched the superbike one the
other day. LOL at bruces serious expert demeanor 😉 hope no babies were
maimed with that pulse jet
Why don’t them four SAD down thumbers just give it up !!!!
Because they have nothing better to do with their lives than knock those of
us who have a passion for this hobby. C’est la vie I guess.
Maybe those people intensly dislike mini shods. I mean quads 😉
+oliverg98
Probably… they aren’t called “the fun police” for nothing and these
miniquads really are fun!
Well now I need to build a mini Quad any suggestions Thanks
Check my RCModelReviews channel — I’m reviewing quite a few different
options at the moment.
Thank you
Just a heads up to anyone in southern Tassie that wants to get racing with
thier mini quad. Rianrex has a channel here on youtube and has been
organizing some race meets.
I think we need to get (globally) organised so that folk can find out where
there’s racing in an area near them.
Would only help the hobby, i think, if people had an easy way to find
casual clubs in thier local area.
Always easier to get out there in the cold when there are a few other like
minded souls about.
I’ll pipe down until i’m in a position to actually help sort some stuff.
Hope you don’t mind the shameless plug for a friends channel too 😉
+Ben Lucas
No worries mate… it’s all about sharing 😉
Away from the “fun police”! Haha. Nice one
Formula one FPV mini quad racing at the world headquarters international
model park in tokoroa New Zealand. Hear hear. I am in.
If it wasn’t so far!! :)
Dead keen, make it happen Bruce!! just give us some warning so we can get
some spares fedex’d in from Hobby King first. Generator, couple of LCD
televisions so spectators can watch the live feeds, sounds awesome. Maybe
we can get some trade pricing from Lumenier? Put us down to sponsor a
QAV250 frame for a prize if so.
Good ideas… it’d be great to stream the action live from the event too —
if only we had some kind of affordable portable broadband capability.
+xjet Skinny Mobile would be worth pitching that to.. They are generally
pretty keen on getting involved with random stuff like this.
Love the idea, but won’t be able to make it from the other side of the
world. So I’m looking into organizing a local one. I was wondering if you’d
be willing to share any resources you’d found to help with the event? I’ve
already checked with the AMA (they don’t seem to be quite as wedged as your
equivalent), but all they’ve got is for fixed wing racing.
FWIW, on the issue of number of planes in the air, they limit each heat in
an event to four aircraft. You can probably get more mini quads in the air
safely, but you can be sure that’ll be safe, so it might make sense to
start there and see how things go.
Yeah… since there’s so much interest, perhaps we can lay the groundwork
for an international standard. I’ll put something up on the web so
everyone can share.
+xjet I’ve registered both drone-racing.org and drone-racing.club for this.
Drop me a PM on G+ if you’d like to use one of them.
+Mike Meyer Where are ya? I’m definitely interested.
+lguystillfly I’m in central oklahoma. I’ve set up a forum (still ugly, but
someone who can do design needs to fix it) for talking about such at
. I’ve listed the info about
the event I’m working on there.
+Mike Meyer Aw, bummer. I’m very interested, but in central Pennsylvania.
OK is a bit far for me to travel to race ;).. sorry 😉
Hi +xjet What airport so I can calculate some travel prices 😀
Thinking about coming from Denmark
I WISH! Long trip from Florida lol
Right now you’d probably be too cold to race if you came straight from a
Florida summer to a Tokoroa winter — but we did some racing on the weekend
and it was *great*!
Excellent ! Can I join the race with tricopter?
I don’t see why not.
Hi Bruce, I want to buy a mini quad with good performance and hard to
break. I have a lot of 3S, 4S, 2200 mah batteries… Is the Blackout Mini H
Quad good? what website to buy from? If not what do you recommend… I
am an experience flyer in RC airplane, RC helicopter and Phantom. I have
Mobius, and Go-Pro camera to use,,,
What is the best time to come down and try your quadcopters ? I have not
bought any yet…
You should keep an eye on the Forest Flier’s webpage to see when we’re
flying next. It’s usually a Sunday and we try to let folk know well in
advance
Setting Up a miniquad racing group in Sydney Australia. Please contact via
facebook if interested.
This years new hobby!
Hey mate, whens the next race day?
We just had a race-day today… fun and carnage abounded. Seven people
flying, only tree branches and pool-noodles harmed (okay, plus *lots* of
props).
We may be racing again next weekend, depending on weather.
Awesome. I’ll see if I can get some cheap flights
+xjet
You might want to hang on a bit… we’re hoping to announce a big race-meet
in the next few weeks. Just have to talk to the local council and ensure
we’ve got a decent venue. Stay tuned… I’ll make an announcement.
Nice one cheers
Hey can someone help me I’ve been saving up for a long time and I finally
got a fpv250. But I got everything to work. But my problem with it now is
my yaw is extremely weird and I can’t even fly it. It feels like I have no
control of it I give it full stick but it barely gives me anything I’m
Kindah getting upset I spent all this money on it and now it’s not working
right
Hey Bruce I would like to participate, do you have any miniquad race intl?
First off, Toks is my home town. Haven’t been there since 86. Secondly, do
you have a recommended RTF complete package with a link? I purchased one
but quickly withdrew it as it was a cheapo that had bad reviews.
+RaidenWarbound Well the basic quad (with FPV transmitter and camera) costs
less than NZ$300. If you don’t already have an RC transmitter and video
goggles or screen then that’ll cost extra as well. You should come out and
have a look one day when we’re flying. Check out our website at:
I live in Christchurch now. Darn. So a bsic set up would consist of:
– Mini Quad
– Transmitter
– FPV setup (goggles)
Correct? Was looking on Alibaba, they had a FC-250 and QAV-250. Are these
knock offs worth it?
+RaidenWarbound Of all the Chinese frames, the ZMR250 is one of the
cheapest and most widely used. Check out the build video series and some of
my other reviews on RCModelReviews to get an idea what’s involved.A full
(budget) setup would cost you: US$80 — RC transmitterUS$210 — miniquad,
receiver, camera,FPV transmitter etcBatteries would be around US$12 eachA
charger is US$30The video goggles are the most expensive single item and
range from US$30 for the Quanum video visor kit through to about US$500 for
a really good set of goggles.
Wow! Thank you sir for the breakdown! I was looking at getfpvdotcom to
compare prices. You’re right – the googles are expensive. The montior would
do just as fine right? Oh and btw, you just got a new sub!
I run an RC Drift club here in chch so am familiar with lipos, chargers,
rx/tx, ESC’s and familiar with FPV/transmitters/monitors with video
production so that helps. 🙂
