This is my hacked, extended range SYMA X5C explorers white special edition flying over 150 mt of altitude at sunset near the port and the Strait of Messina with on board cam and 750 mAh battery. To modify the antenna of the transmitter: first of all, keep in mind that standard length of a 2.4GHZ antenna is 12,5 cm. So, I soldered a copper wire to the original short antenna of 3 cm, to reach the overall length of 15.62 cm from the circuit board (I used 5/4 of full 2.4 GHZ wave, instead of 12.5 cm. You can also cut the wire at 6.25 cm that is half wave). In case of FPV, to extend more the range, you can sold another copper wire (only of 6.25 cm total) within the drone in place of the original antenna, or do an extension of it to reach 62.5mm. I’ll try! Same work, less space! PS: I changed the inclination of the cam too, to get better view of the horizon, and I painted the 4 angles to view it better at that height! This can do flips while filmig! Over 150 meters very high! Have fun! 😀

Dopo la modifica raggiunge più di 150 metri d’altezza (potrebbe andare oltre ma è difficile vederlo a quella distanza), a differenza dei 30 mt dichiarati. Premettendo che la lunghezza standard delle antenne con frequenza 2.4 GHZ è 12.5 cm, basta saldare un filo di rame in aggiunta o sostituirlo completamente all’ antenna originale (che è di soli 3 cm circa) dentro il telecomando, avendo l’accortezza di misurare una lunghezza complessiva di 12.5 cm dal circuito (IO HO USATO 15.62 cm CIOè 5/4 dell’ onda standard di 2.4 GHZ, che dovrebbe fare ottenere risultati migliori, dunque lo consiglio). Si può anche usare metà della lunghezza cioè 6.25 cm o la lunghezza standard di 12,5 cm. Stesso lavoro da 6,25 sul drone eventualmente, se si vuole modificare ulteriormente in FPV. Ps: ho modificato anche l’angolazione della telecamera che era troppo verso il basso, e colorato gli spigoli per per poterlo vedere da più lontano. Volate responsabilmente! 😀

no, I soldered only 1 hard wire to its original. in total 15,62 cm. In the
quad you can do this, but only 6,25 if you want more, for example in FPV

I extended it! You have to peel the top of the original to solder, so
caution!

lunghezza dell’antenna complessiva ottimale e’ di 12.5.. ma piu’ lunga e’
e meglio e’? altra domanda: non essendo bravo con le saldature vorrei
sapere se l’antenna e’ saldata sulla scheda o ha un aggancio tipo fast o
altro ( te lo chiedo perche’ non ho il radiocomando per controllare)

color etc? Did you paint it plain or striped for instance?
I simply painted the corners with a permanent marker: green and red like
leds, but it’s pretty useless over 50 mt… I still use leds! 🙂

The better way to do the range mod is to simply either purchase a new 2.4G
antenna, such as those used in cordless phone bases, or 2.4G routers, or
rip apart an old phone base or router. Optimum length for a 2.4G antenna
is 4.92″ for a full wave. Then open the controller, carefully remove the 8
screws holding the PCB in, then move the PCB out of a bit to expose the
tiny (and somewhat pathetic) coaxial antenna lead. It is soldered onto a
tiny bit of pcb attached to the main board. Unsolder the existing lead and
solder in botht he core wire and the shield sleeve wire where the old
antenna was connected. How you mount the new antenna is your choice really
as long as it is horizontal and not vertical. Remember that the signal
radiates out of the sides (length of the antenna), and not the tip. So if
you purchase or salvage a 2.4Ghz antenna,make sure it is the hinged type
that can be folded on it’s side. You want it’s length to be parallel to
the horizon. There are dozens of tutorial videos on Youtube on how to do
it. Simply soldering on a single piece of copper wire is not the best way
to do it, and as a matter of fact, it can actually reduce range, depending
on where it is placed. As for the receiver antenna on the Quad, Some
people swear it helps range, while others say it made no dofference at
all. And remember than any of these mods WILL violate your warranty, so do
them at your own risk.
