This is a tutorial video detailing flying tips on how to turn a quadcopter. Banked turns, sideslip rudder turns, and turn tightening with pitch control are discussed. For this video, I used the very nimble $45 WLToys V212 6 axis quadcopter. Great for beginners and advanced flyers alike.
The V212 is one of the best quadcopters for beginners to learn outdoor flying.
Six axis stabilization allows automatic sensing of uncommanded sideslip and dropping. Very sharp banked turns can be achieved easily with a six axis quadcopter. Such turns are extremely difficult with three axis quadcopters. Also, if the quadcopter is flying uncomfortably high, it can be rapidly brought to a safer altitude by simply cutting the throttle. Just increase the throttle when it gets close to the ground, it will right itself and achieve hover. Highly recommend that you consider a six axis quadcopter, especially if you’re new to quadcopter flying.

great help thanks just done my first bank turn. thanks a lot……….
thanks very helpfull
You always have that whole place to yourself. I’m going to have to come and
visit you. It might get crowded with 2 flyers.
I always go early in the morning, right after the morning run/walk with the
dog. It’s always empty then, and the wind is usually minimal.
I’m thinking about getting my first quad without any experience on flying
these things, or flying anything.. So I’m going for the cheap ones, like
this V212 or Lishitoys L6052. And before buying I been watching some of
your videos on how these perform and I’ve enjoyed, so thank you for doing
these =)
Didn’t even think of that, about removing the camera. Thanks, I’ll get the
X5C–1 =)
I went for the X5C-1 and now waiting for delivery. Can’t wait to get my
hands on that.. The Hubsan X4 is too “toy’ish” for my taste.
+Quadcopter 101 I got the quad today and took my first flights with it,
indoors and outdoors. And true, it is a easy thing to fly. I can’t wait to
go somewhere indoors where is enough space to fly the thing. Outdoors isn’t
a good option now, winter and windy so too much struggle for beginner 😀

Nobody views your videos so you try to get them advertised on others
videos? And also, if you bothered to read before posting your “full review”
you would have noticed that I already bought the quad..
Very nice video and explanation of techniques , rock on with more bra!
This is a great training video. Good job, and thanks for doing it. Just
getting into quads myself (Hubsan H107C, Syma X5C, JJRC H6C, and Estes
Proto X SLT). Been flying for about a month and wanted to expand my
abilities, so this video was just the ticket. Looking forward to building
my own and getting more into the HW & SW (my area of most expertise). Flew
sailplanes (thermal and slope) years ago, but this is a whole new thing.
You flying site is really nice with the mountains all around. Thanks
again, Bill

+Quadcopter 101 Thanks, I’ve already been on that site and found it very
well put together and helpful. BTW, any recommendations for DIY quad sites.
Got lots of questions about TXs, RXs, controllers, etc. that I need to
research.
I figured out/learned how to make banked turns on quads while using a
simulator. I was messing around with planes in the simulator and quickly
learned how to make bank turns and applied it to quads. Basic plane flying
is so much easier and I recommend folks with a sim practice banking/turns
on planes first (more stability) then apply it to quads. Fantastic vid in
any event!!
“Thanks and your time and help!!! Your real time tips are
great!!!!!!!!!!!!
You provide a brilliant service guys – I’m very grateful and really looking
forward to putting it all into practice when my first Quads arrive
(tomorrow; next week..next month…what is it with Bangood?) !
With free shipping, the quads actually do ship via a slow boat from China
(takes about 3 to 4 weeks).
BIG thumbs up from me for this tutorial
In this video are flying with self leveling active or just acro mode?
Self leveling
I thought I should add that it’s great that we get such a sense of your
sheer enjoyment at quad flying from this video – it’s an inspiration…
Yes! Thank you, the controller cam is wonderful! The V212 looks like the
same frame as the V262 & V666, do know if that’s true?
Same type of design (carbon fiber arms), but smaller in size.
From center of blade to center of pc board is 8 ” or so on mine…yours is
Less than that? Thx
+Thomas Faddis Yes, the V212 is only 4 1/2″ for that same distance.
Nice job on the tutorial, how did you record both the controller and the
quad, it seemed like you were alone.
Keep up the good work!
One camera attached to the bill of my baseball cap. Another camera
attached to my controller.
What video editing software do you use to over lay the videos with each
other?
Adam,
I use VSDC Free Video Editor
building my 3rd quad and just learning to turn. Currently own a 250mm,
450mm and now a huge 680mm running on 6S lipo. hey I blame it on the weather
. BTW great videos!
Again, I appreciate your turning tips.
Very instructive! I have a Phantom FC40 with a GoPro. I’m trying to learn
how to circle an object while keeping the nose pointed at the object, such
as a steeple or a statue. do you have any tips for doing that?
+George Moses That’s not easy to do without a remote gimbal system, and a
second camera operator 😉 The cheaper quadcopters have a feature called
headless mode which allows turning translational flight. With headless
mode, yaw control has no effect on the direction of travel. All directional
control is through pitch and roll only. But I’m not sure if the Phantom has
a similar feature?
I love the quiet chuckles to yourself showing the sheer joy you get from
flying. It’s inspiring!
On your recommendation I’m learning on a V212 and I agree totally.
Any Idea where I can get replacements for the mini-screws that locate the
props? They’re incredibly easy to loose.
I can’t seem to make this work in the Real Flight Simulator. They have a
quad in there, but when I try to bank like this, it just starts sliding
all over, or else progressively steepens into the ground?
+Light Panther Turn on auto stabilization in the settings.
+Quadcopter 101 Hi. Thanks for the note. I’m using a different quad in the
simulator (Gaui 330x-s). I can’t find a setting for auto-stabilize. I can
set the physics to ‘easy” but that disables yaw completely. My version of
RealFLight is 6.5, which doesn’t have any of the newer quads.
Great stuff.Learned a lot. Thanx
Great video, you explain the banked turn very well. I’m just starting with
the turning stuff so I’m going to give this a try!
Thanks for your video. Just got the X11C and still learning. Just
wondering how your controller sticks are setup. My left stick has the
throttle and left/ right, and right stick forward/ backward and
sideways…when applying aileron, do you mean apply yaw? When you say
apply rudder turn, is that just your regular right or left turn? How is
your controller set up in this video…can’t tell which sticks does what.
Thanks for your help.
Dru, my controller is setup the same as yours. This is called “Mode 2”
control settings. Aileron means roll (Right stick, left/right movement).
Rudder means yaw (Left stick, left/right movement). Yes rudder turn is
just a regular left right turn without applying any right stick roll. And
the following site may help you
+Quadcopter 101 Thank you for the clarity and the link for practice tips. I
probably need to get extra batteries for these practice runs. ha ha Thanks
again..take care.
Especially enjoyed this video. Really useful basic information it that I
failed to find elsewhere. Keep up the good work Quadcopter 101. I’ll be
watching…..
