Great stuff, Danny. Always love the drone shots, but, I think I’ll stick to a tripod mounted camera for now. Taking stills and video is enough to keep me content, LOL! Keep up the stellar work!

Thank You Danny for sharing the nuances of taking drone video footage. This definitely gives your subscribers a bird’s eye perspective. By the way, the Tampa Bay TV media market might hire you, or should I say rehire you. If not mistaken, when I lived in Winter Haven in the 1980s, I believe you did the voice over for WFLA-8. Could be wrong since I was just a high school student who loved watching trains in my early years. Happy Railfanning and looking forward to seeing more drone footage. 🙂
I’m still waiting to see a drone railfanner sneeze, which causes the drone to go DOWN, and have the drone get crashed into by an AC4400, or for the drone to drop into an empty coal hopper, never to be seen again.

Somewhere in the vast LA metro while sitting in a siding waiting for the Commuters to finish, we hear over the radio of an Amtrak Surfliner smacking a drone to pieces at track speed. Apparently, the guy was flying it around the opening of a tunnel lol Oh well.

Last of them Seaboard signals. I caught the ACL and Southern signals in Cordele, GA about a week before they where replaced. The old Southern bridge signal in Cordele still stands as does a few Southern signals in Sparks, GA that are still guarding the old Albany to Sparks Southern now GFRR line. I’m fortunate enough to have video and pictures of these now obsolete signals. Nice video.

when you’re flying the drone pan with the train it will look a lot better. it looks as if you are scared to fly when the train rolls through because your movements show it. keep it up..

Danny, I think there is at least one more set of former Seaboard signals on the S Line just north of Route 42 at Dallas. I assume this because there are two southbound signals together on the right side of the ROW which you have said is a unique Seaboard practice.
This gives me flashbacks to the time I was stupid enough to start up a drone right outside my apartment. I got too excited and enedee you crashing it into shrubs and a concrete pillar. #NeverAgain that traumatized me.

Not a fellow Railbuff who just HAD to get a few photos of a passing CSXT train underneath I-75 heading back towards AL in Valdosta, GA, & STOPPED in the MIDDLE of the INTERSTATE ( luckly as you stated, but worse, no COPS )! LOL!

Does this work require a Part 107 license? I’m assuming it would. You seem to be very professional in your work, so I wouldn’t doubt you have full credentials.

You have to watch that exhaust. I can’t even think about getting those drones but I have one with GPS and self landing plus other stuff. Trains are part of the reason I fly.
Honestly, and this is just my opinion, I’m fine with ground shots…I prefer them because they’re “safer” to an extent. I haven’t yet experienced with bridge shots, but I could probably make good with one of those too… I’m just not really into drones… I like ground shots of trains better.
A drone would come in handy to get places like Union Pacific’s Albina Yard…its huge, and literally hugs the Willamette river in Portland…Also BNSF’s Vancouver yard…mains on either side of the yard, and it stretches a few miles or so…other than yards…not really an interest of mine…

Danny, while I respect your self criticism about crossing the 2-track main to retrieve your drone, you are still way more qualified and safety conscious than the average rail trespasser. As a railroader, your attitude is refreshing.

Your speaking voice is still better then your drone shots, so far! When I 1st stumbled on your videos I thought you were part of the railroads PR team…professional sounding voice overs will win the day each time.
You mention getting time tables for lines that you monitor. Any ideas on where to pick them up, particularly UP in the East Texas area.
This maybe a question already asked. I did look, but I did not see any. Has anybody ever encountered Railroad or any other Police telling you not to video the trains? Any help or hints to not get in trouble?

Thats a great idea. I have to stand on a bridge to get an aerial view. Have you ever made a video on railway radio traffic. The jargon is confusing. I live in Ga. And I make some videos of CSX trains. I scan them, but its Greek to me some of the things that are said. If you have a chance one day consider making a video on that. Thanks for your informative videos.

I’m not really a rail fan myself, or at least not to this extent, but I find rail fan videos relaxing. And yours are by far the best I’ve found. Your camera work, editing, and voice overs with extra information are superb. Thank you.
Ha ha that’s great stuff! I have flown multicopters for years along with all other rc vehicles! I am am aerial photographer now but I can sit hear and smile. Because when I first got into the multicopters you had to build it and software PID adjustments for the quad to fly right. So many attempts and ooopsys?

I hope you can give me some advice. I do more ship spotting than railfanning these days. Most of my videos are from a spot on land but I have folks who will take me out on a boat. I have found the video from a camera held on a boat unsatisfactory and have been considering getting a drone to as near as duplicate as possible my land side video while still doing still photos with my DSLR. Do you feel it is safe/makes sense to “park” a drone in the air to let a ship pass by for video while I do still photos from the camera? Thanks and love your videos!

Great railfan drone video shots, of course, also considering you like to focus on the production instead of worrying about pilot issues, you might enjoy a yuneech hexacopter drone. You could program in your ATCS gps info and tell the drone to fly the course over the target track and return. Freeing you of many piloting issues

What are the limitations on drones (other than obviously near airports) that you’re under, and have you talked to the rail companies to get some kind of permission in certain circumstances to use a drone—you mentioned on a couple videos you couldn’t or didn’t want to fly over some sidings and such?
