Thank you to everyone who has watched and commented, regardless of your opinion of my piloting skills! Remember, this video was created at the very BEGINNING of my Phantom flying.
I have improved vastly 😉
Best,
@joshywashington
Here is a footage from 5 epic dji phantom crashes and 5 lessons I learned from the experience.
Thanks for watching, please subscribe, comment and share!
Lesson #6, learn to catch it, landing in the dirt sucks for the phantom,
and you.
+mark burch yup!
+Joshua Johnson
Catching it may save you from sand, but if you mess up, those props are not
unforgiving of the fingers they meet.
when in doubt….FLY UP UP UP!
+Mike Tess serioulsy, it should say that on the box, right? 😉
Tx for the vid! I envy your travels.
+Max Miller thanks for watching max, travel is LIFE!
Great tips and i think it’s the true mark of intelligence that you are
sharing your mistakes as lessons for us all to learn from. It’s easy to put
pride before reality. We will all likely still make some or all of these
same mistakes but we will be more aware and certainly not have an excuse.
+Rob Nielsen REALLY appreciate the kind words, I know that I put myself out
there for a lot of criticism for this vid and other like it, but I feel its
important to help others if possible. I made some dumb mistakes, and I’m
still learning – but i love flying and filming and want us all to be safe
and creative!
+Joshua Johnson
The simple fact is, you realize where you made mistakes and acknowledge
that. The people I have the problem with are the ones that make mistakes
and blame everyone else. In Your case, you are posting them for the
betterment of all of us. If some people just decide to dump on you for it,
then perhaps they are not the ones that you should be listening to.
I had tree issues, and with dirt or sand, its way easier to catch it.
+jonclay patterson true true true
You will not have to worry about the direction drone is facing if you fly
in course lock. I hit course lock before leaving the ground.
Be sue to put your cell in airplane mode before power up.
I have crashed several times on low battery and wondered why. Good Tips
Man you sure get around.
+adznz11 travel is a big part of my life and work. I love it and live it.
Been to queenstown in NZ yet? If not make that a destination if you are
after scenery that’s right up there brother.
Or you use the IOC to keep the orientation for you!
Thanks. I just received mine today and am excited to fly it, but terrified
to crash or lose it. My wife would kill me.
+Joseph Slagle I keep all knowledge of crashes and near misses from my
wifey…unless she watches this vid!
Actually your first lesson 1 is what’s called vortex ring state.
giving it upward thrust
makes it worse.
+Alan Fullmer great link and info Alan – can you elaborate on what would be
the best course of action?
Moving it in a direction other than up or down will get you out of the
stale air. E.g. forward.
Man u are not the best pilot :p but u teach other about your failures and
this is a pretty cool thing, thx fot that.
+TheSymbian86 I’m actually an awesome pilot now 😉 – these are noob
mistakes, through and through and I posted this at the very start of my
phantom progression. I get paid to capture footage now. booyah! thanks for
watching and commenting tho !!
question. when it crashes. what happens to the phantom? does the propellers
automatically stop?
+martin louis no – the props will usually spin and flop around unless they
are being obstructed. Every crash and scuffle is different though…. its
never good 😉
+Joshua Johnson don’t crash. got it haha thanks
thankyou for sharing,dude..
+Jadwin Edison always a pleasure! thank YOU for watching!
Lesson 6: Don’t leave your lipo battery laying about while not in use on a
wooden book shelf full of books which will feed a fire should anything
happen to that lipo. Instead keep the lipo battery in a lipo bag or the
like while in storage, charging or discharging.
+xXG.L.HXx I REALLY need to get a lipo bag, great advice!
I don’t have a Phantom but I’ve made everyone of those mistakes lol. But I
fly through, under, over and around trees all the time with my mini quad in
my own back yard (I would never fly like that in a public area where
there’s other people) so I guess I’m just asking to crash.
Use the return home button to land and pay attention to the lights to sort
your orientation. Most of these problems are pretty much avoidable to be
honest.
Are you still enjoying it
+OclottyCards YES 🙂
You should consider flying in IOC-enabled course lock mode, then you never
have to worry about losing orientation when the camera gets inverted.
I have a phantom and never crash. Is not very “inevitable” to crash you
know? 😛
+Giulio Asso oh ok
I understand the reason for wanting prop guards on your phantom but in
reality you don’t need them and your phantom will fly so much better
without them. Especially in any type of wind, try it.
+shield400 I ditched the prop guard because they kept getting in my shots
with my new gimbal… i will throw them on if I’m flying close to something
(like filming a mural up close)
Nice video, thanks for making it. The issues you experienced with out of
control descent probably has more to do with a vortex ring state (
) than weak batteries. I
have had this happen myself and it’s pretty scary.
+Greg Lusk good call – I had never heard of VRings until recently….i feel
so sciencey!
Good advice. Looking into getting a Phantom. Seems like what you’re saying
is common sense but I’m sure it’s not that simple when your brain is trying
to do 10 things at once. Your last one will be my biggest problem. My son
and I have a toy quad copter we’ve been practicing with and once that
sucker turns your hand/eye needs to step up to the plate. Will keep your
advice in the back of my mind when flying (along with all the other info my
pea brain will be trying to sort out)
+malibustigs thanks for watching – I bet flying with your son is a blast!
have fun!!
Last lesson. Buy a cheap mini quad and learn on that first. And no, not
everybody crashes. Some of us have never crashed once.
+Ed Bighi yet
I live on Curacao and i want to buy one do you think the winds are too
strong on Curacao ??
+Miejo Electronics I think it all depends on the conditions, I found a few
great spots on Curacao perfect for flying…go for it!
Dude this video was really well made! Thanks a lot for your advice. Your
lessons have not gone unnoticed!
Lesson Number 0:
Never ever store your lipos openly in a book-shelf, if one of those fails,
you have a full-blown book-burning on your hands.
Get an ammo-box at least and put them in there, this way you have a chance
to save you and your flat from damage…
Otherwise a nice vid.
Lesson 6.check controller before taking off.
It was on a day when I was flying my drone, the controller for the forward
and backwards were faulty,so I take off and it went straight forward.then
crashes.then I broke my gps antenna:'(
your not very good at this are you.
