Laxå flygplats 2019-04-17. A speed test has been on my list for a long time, and now is finally the time. The structure is optimized for light weight and hovering flight, which becomes apparent in this speed test where the back side of this design surface, namely high drag. Sitting in the chAIR it fees pretty speedy but the actual ground speed of around 50km/h is not very impressive. There is still headroom on the throttle but when flying the vehicle it is apparent that air resistant becomes a significant counterpart around 50km/hand the overall flight efficiency drops. A maximum practical take off weight test will be carried out later on this spring.
163kg TOW, 35kg LiPo currently mounted on the craft.

Is there a reason why you are still using a timer on a manned drone? To me it would make more sense to have a voltage display or a “Fuel Gauge” seeing as how you are physically on the aircraft. Very cool project and i’m looking forward to watching more of it.

An idea, use every other motor with high pitch props or high pitch on the back hoops or back half of each hoop. Don’t know if that would work, just a thought. I hope you’ll get a parashoot for the alt. testing ! Every time I see you in the air, I also think of springs in the legs (or shocks) in case of a hard landing. And then install iNavflight or Ardupilot and you have waypoints feature. Put a crash test dummy in the seat and you can program the flights needed for speed tests and other tests.

Please note, regarding your comment of vibration, airspeed, ground speed and tail wind. When you are airborne, your craft does not experience different characteristics when flying in a tail wind or in a head wind, other than a change in ground speed. You noted that you have higher vibration at the higher speeds. At 50 kph ground speed into the wind, your air speed is higher than 50 kph. For this discussion, let’s presume a 10 kph wind, straight down the runway. This means that your craft had to travel at 60 kph through the air to keep up with the vehicle at 50 kph.
When you turned around, you now have the benefit of the wind to assist your ground speed. The vehicle traveling at 50 kph, while you keep pace, means that your craft has to manage only 40 kph.
“Upwind” requires 60 kph air speed, “downwind” requires 40 kph air speed. You would certainly feel the difference, as you’ve noted.
For more useful information, an on-board air speed indicator should be used. Subjective impressions are great conversation points, but not good for solid analysis.

what if there were two levels of props, and the top ones could push air down, and also up? If there were a few fans, maybe on the back or the front of the back fans, pulling air in, it might reduce drag.

I think 50 kph is a great speed. When I was a teenager and got my first moped it was restricted to 30mph/50kph.
It would be great, now that you have this built to refine it and make it more efficient but at the same time it is an amazing thing you have achieved and there really should be an award presented to you or some kind of sponsoring.

6:28 You compared the drag coefficient of a sphere (0.47) to a streamlined body (0.04). In fact the value for a cylinder perpendicular to flow ranges from 0.7 to 1.2 depending on things like surface roughness & Reynolds Number. However since the craft pitches relative to the direction of travel, there is no way to properly implement a streamlined cross section, so what you have is as good as it gets.

I could see you making a cross country trip across fields and then up above the trees to get over. In other words, as we say in the US, as the crow flies. I would suggest a ring shaped neck-brace to put under your helmet, they sell them for cheap for motorsport purposes. Would possibly help in the situation of a roll over. But this is very cool stuff! Amazing work 🙂
The Wright brothers idea was to not build something stable and easy to fly but something challenging but controllable and master it, like learning to ride a bike
take it to a next level. put a fairing on it. Did you considered moving all “the power plant” inside a fairing and have just 4 or more airducts to blow the air downwards? Much like a Harrier test bed but with power and control on same ducts. This would keep the blades away from anything and lower the noise from them as you could control this aspect with the fairing.

Usually, the speed regulator warns before the cells are drained, by making the motors run jerky att full throttle. At least in electric medel flying. And we always use timer in model flying, because the cells last mutch longer if we dont drain them to mutch.

This is really neat. The first one of these I’ve seen that I would like. Give it some distance and do some refinements. What a fantastic craft. It even looks comfortable to sit in and fly.
This is a man in love with FLIGHT.
You could simply carry a GPS with you and determine your maximum speed that way.
I would try to make the ‘wings’ more rigid as they will fold up during flight the way they are now. See, every now and then a pilot needs to make drastic changes in attitude, reducing lift on one side to near zero to stop a roll or offset some air turbulence. with the way you have the wings now, the side that has the rotors reduced to zero lift, will suddenly fall down and when you go to give it full thrust again a second or two later the sudden jolt might rip the wing apart. So my advice is to try to make it so that the wing-hoops can somehow stay supported even when there is no rotor lift.
i like the idea of many motors to avoid death if one fails but your structure is still a concern for me. The best would be an independent motor mount attached to the seat for each motor but weight would be a difficulty. I envision a set of motor mounts attached to the seat in such away so they could fold back and all be pointing in one direction for transportation. something like this. good luck

+amazingdiyprojects charge of Li-Po batteries is quite tricky to measure just by the voltage. Standard procedure is to track power transfer by measuring volts and amps and integrating over time. Thus a pretty much accurate charge can be estimated. The “counter” can be reseted when the battery is without load.

The small wire that automotive manufacturers wrap around antennas may be worth some investigation to see if you could apply it to help with turbulence around the tubes… I believe they found a large reduction in drag with it…

there is a phone AP that measures speed very accurately, ive used it on my bikes and its within 96% accurate or just go as fast as you can and have the car keep up and either get the driver to keep an eye on how fast or film it

Have you considered using carbonfibre tubes for the superstructure? Your strength to weight ratio will be a lot higher, as well as improving rigidity.
This would allow you to add very thin front and trailing fairings to radically improve the aerodynamics.
My guess is that if you also go for the higher pitch propellers you suggested, your efficiency will improve by 10% for each of these two modifications, resulting in a possible extra 10kph, or 50kph for less power used.
I’m just guessing here, but it seems possible. It might also be worth streamlining your cockpit/fuselage with a lightweight pod shape that tapers nicely to the rear to reduce your seat drag.
My final thought is that if you do go for a pod fuselage, you could design it to remain horizontal to the line of flight, with the rotor structures moving and pitching independently of the fuselage to achieve increased forward motion.
Final safety thought: If you can incorporate D3O technology into the seat and underside of the fuselage, you will make it safer in any sudden descent situations.

just a thought: 5 inch prop pitch seems already agressive. how about thinking of tilting the chair backwards. This way when your whole aircraft has a higher forward pitch it won’t feel so risky. And boom you’re faster (unless your motor speed was already close to 100%)

Terrible design idea to have your propeller clusters be tied to the center body with cords. Your trust vector is directly dependent on the angle of attack relative to your flight control computer . Should one or more propeller clusters change its angle of attack because of vortex ring state, high wind, partial loss of power or any other reason you will experience sever oscillation resulting in total loss of control. You really should consider making those propeller clusters rigid to the center body. Multiple small motors is a good concept but trying to reduce weight by using a flexible frame and cord is a very bad idea when it comes to multi rotors. Use a rigid frame, your life may depend on it.

Slic J A rigid frame is a must. Improvements will start to make it more like an electric helicopter but that’s the best way to do it.

Very neat projects. Wondering how a fairing will aid in lowering drag and also integrating the batteries into the frame more so that not in the square boxes. Seems the modern electric devices are literally a device built around a battery… so integrating the batteries into the frame seems the logical method for main stream mass produced devices. Seems like was noted the low drag airfoil looking tubing might aid in ducting the airflow also and better control and not only reducing drag. That’s a great observation and the streamlined low drag airfoil looking tubing material is what I was planning on using in the recumbent trike designs I was working on. Fairings are the way to go also and can be made like a strip wood canoe method using foam strips and a light fiberglass/kevlar/carbon fiber outer coating. Seemed to me the vacuum formed, though lighter, are more challenging to make. Neat to see the advances with batteries and I wonder if since electric can have more redundancy in propulsion systems to prevent catastrophic events from single engine failures… if generators will be feasible in the future too like hybrid designs as I’ve thought since a young age having a sailplane like a thermonuclear power plant electric U2 style aircraft might be something feasible in my lifetime. Seems with advances in liquid rocket propulsion systems too… there can be emergency braking and hover landing system implemented now days. Anyhow… great to watch the update!

Is it possible if you can replace those kevlar lines with hydraulic stays that you usually find in car bonnets or at the hatch backs of SUVs they are lightweight and maybe safer and can be easily fashioned into those aluminum components of your aircraft, thanks for sharing the video ?
You should get in touch with some parachute company, get something big enough and try to go as hight as possible and live the experience of really flying. Get Red Bull involved.
put a few props angles the other way so they push your directly forward. you can get more airspeed without such a severe tilt that way

If you had aerodynamic sleeves covering the tubing that is able to rotate around the tube it will find optimal spot for minimal on its own as your angle of flight changes.
Very nice job. Big progress from the old gas powered one. Why don’t you make a light weight kevlar cabin to streamline the whole thing and integrate the propeller hubs into the cabin structure. Then don’t need the cables. It’ll be much more aerodynamic.

This is incredible, I have been watching you work on this project for years and you astound me. I very much intend to build something similar myself eventually. As a helicopter pilot myself this seems like the ultimate freedom. I am curious though, what was the reasoning behind building the rotor quadrants at chest level? In my mind, you would increase built in stability and safety by having the disks above your head and having all that weight securely under the rotors? Either way, amazing project and I look forward to your future videos.

Dear friend, please put some more sort of safety equipment on your device. I’m worried for you. Even just some wheels would be good if you lose power: you have a chance if you lose power while have forward momentum, you will land with a bump and roll. As it is, if you lose power moving forward, your front chair legs jam hard into the ground and you go onto your face hard.
Neat contraption! I should like to see a streamlined protective plexiglass bubble protecting your upper body (and a shield down below for your ‘Marriage Vegetables’ in case of prop breakup…) Also, it seems there’s room between the last two propulsor units for a pusher prop to extend. Do you have any leeway to add some weight for another motor to see if you can get more speed that way?

Sorry this is so cool but im so paranoid that the kevlar cables will snap and the blades will all come up and blend you. What do you think of flipping the blades facing down with some mesh guards or something with metal bars on elbows on top to limit the motion so they rest on the floor but are straight when operating

*** Brilliant idea and execution. I do have a suggestion. You should consider combining several technologies into one VTOL that can fly forward at a fast enough pace to cover some distance. For example creating a very small (2 seats) fixed wing that has props for the Vertical take off and small jet engines or a different set of props that can propel the craft froward. More complicated set up would be to make the props rotate from a vertical to horizontal position but I can foresee multiple complications with something like that. If you shaped the craft properly you could allow it to land on water or ground. With your brain, you could do some amazing things and I bet you could get most of the funding needed through a crowdsourced based site from most of your viewers. I would certainly pitch in. Thanks for all the amazing videos you create.

On forward speed…wouldn’t you have to worry about the forward air pushing down the structure? You have no structure for any sort of negative “G” or the downward force on the top of the propellers and structure. Is that clear? Thanks for posting this!

Brilliant design and the best I’ve seen so far. I’d like to see the chair upgraded to a more practical pod. Maybe 3 or 4 landing / takeoff legs with spring tension to soften a fall or when landing. I wonder how helium could be used to support weight requirements. Incorporating drone/blimp tech. I’d love to see this design improved on because I think it’s the best design out there.
Maybe a very stupid idea; why not use wingshaped aluminium for the structure so in forward flight you have more lift?!

Have you thought about a parachute like you have on microlights to be safe and also I wonder if you have thought about getting more dynamic lift by building a wing shape which could gain lift from the shape of your propeller and framework housing I’m sure you must have some dynamic lift that is at the moment being wasted by drag. I can see drones using this design flying around soon…. it’s by far the most clever concept. With some more R&D this could be safer to fly than any airplane today.
I agree, a very smart design. For less weight and less resonance …replace the Aluminium pipes with carbon.
i think a roll bar and a HANS device would make a helmet even safer. maybe consider a kill switch marked with HiVis paint mounted in a location accessible from the bottom and top should rescuers unfamiliar with the vehicle need to turn it right side up or to pull an injured operator and/or grounded casualty away to safety for treatment.

what is the technical reason why you are not under the propellers like every helicopter/drone I know,but have your torso above the propellers? that puzzles me, wouldn’t that make the drone/flying machine inherently more unstable flying and much more dangerous in case of a bad landing?

I’m wondering.. if you double up the props.. putting one facing downward under the top propellers flip the blades so both pushing air downwards and both spinning opposite directions from each other (balance).. would this mean you can reduce the overall size of the craft? means less drag maybe more maneuverable.. but. maybe can keep the same size.. double the propellers as suggested add another chair n batteries.. fly your woman around… then the next step is to build an automated trailer for your luggage, and picnic basket

Wow. Simple and cool. Like all genial.
Right off the bat, I recognize that this contraption type has a couple of weak links. Not the motors as there is a high number of them so if any one fails, it can be compensated for. There must be at least one extra unit (controller, gyro…) that is programmed to take over within milliseconds of the primary failing. Obviously, a fall from even 2 meters height will cause some injury, so extreme precaution is necessary.

@Ryan O’Keefe Most lipos are coupled to a charge/discharge electronic. While in operation you don’t want the batteries to equalize, so they are basically powering the device through a diode to prevent getting recharged as this would dramatically lower the efficency of the batteries. They only charge when in charging mode.

I would think that the pilot sitting in the chair would add a huge amount of drag and that could be solved by building an aerodynamic cabin for the pilot and by using aircraft aluminum tubing that has a low cross section sort of like a flattened shape with tapered leading and trailing edges.

Make it a rectangular array then you can shape the tubes into an airfoil for the ones across and more of a vertical blade for the ones forward backward… angle them to create lift at 50 km/h or the desired cruising or top speed
sorry if it´s a dumb asking question but isn´t it preferable to turn that chair 45 degrees and let the new front group make an angle with the ground that you can comfortbly speed forward, back and forth? I guess you can still have two wings to balance stabilization right and left side of vehicle.

having a min voltage display is advantageous versus a timer, in that you can work out the rate of usage/voltage drop. from that, after you get good data to determine what ‘normal’ usage is & can set parameters to stay within, you can extrapolate a possible issue in real time before it becomes an ‘unscheduled high-speed landing’ & a serious emergency.
also, the timer makes several assumptions that could compromise a flight & compound issues on top of issues.
the timer assumes all of the equipment is working properly during flight. mechanical & electrical are not considered with a timer.
the timer assumes the weather is static & optimal. a tailwind can quickly turn into a headwind without warning. or no wind at all can turn into a nasty crosswind. these situations will force a reaction from you to maintain stability. that reaction will involve you using more or less power than anticipated.
the timer assumes a static barometric pressure. it takes more power to stay aloft in low pressure areas than high pressure ones.
the timer assumes constant velocity. changing speed or direction will affect power consumption.
having more information is safer than less information every time.

Amazing work! I like your design. At some point you will want an instrument panel. ALSO, some active noise cancelling headphones, so it’s more relaxing from a noise perspective. Even a phone can provide GPS data for your speed and altitude. All good wishes!

@8.35 wot did you expect ‘carbon burner?’ its airspeed planes refer too, for 100 years. Cessna usually travels 60-100 k. The speed of flying is because you avoid roads.

If you want to go higher add a parasail.
Place the tube inside a lite foam then wrap it with a lightweight sheet of fiberglass coat it and paint it in a light coat of ceramic paint… like this you can get it to cut threw wind like butter because you can shape it any way you need… This will solve your wind resistance problem… Also if you can work with a drone programming person you can write a self calibration program… So it will self calibrate like regular drones so you don’t have to worry about the drone being of balance,crashing, and other things that would help your flying be more smooth, plus you would be able to focus on all the other things that need your attention…

A very clever idea. A winged plane uses speed to create lift. Drones like this have to provide lift and forward motion which must need a lot more power. How long can you fly for compared to a winged machine?

It seems to be very stable.
I imagine it will eventually look somewhat like a flying saucer, as it takes shape, with added aerodynamic carbon fiber fairings and center “fuselage” with retractable landing gear. Or better yet, moving the chair or pod under the rings to provide easy entry to cockpit, improve horizontal stability with better center of gravity, pick up more lift and directional speed while saving some weight.
I’ll be anxiously watching.

There was a spark at the 2.55 mark and 2.561 spark coming from underneath the rear left blade about 3 to 4 feet and then there was an orb just about 3 to 5 seconds after that that flew above your head take a look at the video you’ll see what I’m talking about very interesting

I know that weight is a concern, but so is safety. You should add, at the very least, “roll-over” bars, and some kind of cushioned landing pads or wheels. Also, I’m wondering if there should be more “devotion” to vertical lift — like maybe one, big round “hoop” (or concentric hoops). Steer by shifting weight, or like a VTL craft?
Create a frame that has airfoil characteristics so in forward flight it can generate a little lift and have less drag.

I have watch bits of each build, gasoline, and electric. I feel, for the gasoline build, the two center motors, on each side, may be more beneficial if the support arms were extended slightly. Giving more of a circular patern to the motors.
For the electric build, I would suggest addressing a altitude failure with a parachute, AND something like the airbags of motor vehicle. Your project really excited me just by watching, I could only imagine what it would be like to fly. God bless.

This seems great – very safe and has good speed no real need for it to be faster – i think something like this that doesnt go too fast and has a good higeht but not too high has huge potential – if it crashes it can be very safe – maybe im wrong but if its how i think than i really dont know why this doesnt catch up

The control precision is amazingly good for a “prototype”. Great job on achieving balance, stability and agility in such a early stage of the development. But for safety reasons I would consider implementing some sort of schielding construction, maybe made of translucent plastic. That would protect you from smaller objects that get sucked into the propellers and then flying like a bullet towards you. It could actually even reduce air resistance but would add some addtional weight.
would it be possibe to build 8 smaller circles. lets say half the size of the 4, and then to align 2 on top of another so you can minimize the total wing area?

ehh, 30 mph is ok i guess if in no hurry to get anywhere. the problem with traveling is how far can you go safely on a battery load. meaning how long will the batteries last before recharging will tell you how far you can actually go.

As a prototype, you are right there! Now make your refinements and well, the sky’s the limit! (Ugh. I know.) You are 95%, maybe 98% to having a completely viable form of electric powered transportation! The Kevlar guy wires are Genius! Probably the reason others have failed. When I first saw this (plopping quad rings) I was like, how is this going to work? I didn’t realize the cables were there. They are so light and SUPER strong. (We braid it onto communication cables where I work). Thanks for your hard work and sharing this project. As Dave Jones would say, “Winna’, Winna’, Chicken Dinna’!! (EEVBlog, Australia). That has to be a blast to fly.

It amazing how the small guys are actually flying and the pros basically aren’t. Maybe they are hoping the batteries will get better before they actually start. That’s what I reckon. They are only doing it just in case batteries do eventually make it practical. They are one step ahead cos if the batteries do get a lot better, they at least have a a head start.

@amazingdiyprojects Really impressive project, well done. The timer approach makes sense, though if you did want to do battery monitoring, I have had great results using Arduino’s. A potential divider circuit (two resistors) feeding into an ADC (Analogue to Digital Converter) pin has allowed me to monitor numerous channels/batteries at once. Clever coding would then allow you to monitor cell balancing, problematic cells as well as estimate duration. Good luck with the next stages of your project.

Hello again. I’ve been following you for quite a while, and you are my “hero”, at least from an inventive perspective.
I was originally thinking I would build a gas engine powered quad copter with variable pitch rotors, but have since switched focus (sounds so pathetic to say I “gave up” – but I could see the obstacles were large) to an electric vehicle. My current project is to build a model of the BlackFly manned UltraLite VTOL (google it if you’re not familliar). The moment I saw it, I knew it was ingenious with a design that has fewest moving parts (to fail). I’m wondering if you have any insight into how to select high power motor/prop/ESC combo’s given the incredible work you did with your manned “quad” (76 motors??) copter. Apparently, the founder of “Opener” the company developing the BlackFly has patents on motor design which focus on reducing eddys in the rotor shell by building it with thin laminations of silicone steel separated by thin layers of epoxy. I’m just wondering if you’ve had any experience with this type of high power motor. The BlackFly design is VTOL capable, but travels in cruise like an airplane, so the high power requirements of the motor are for limited time periods during take-off and landing. I hope to someday build a full scale model similar to the BlackFly. Right now, I’;m working on a model to work out the flight controller software which I’ve written myself with the starting aid of Joop Brooking of Netherlands. I’m doing the orientation calculation using Quaternions so its quite a departure from Joops original code.
