quick q – with this setup why not move the batteries out under the individual motors and shrink the electronics too? You could basically shrink the center to 3.5 x 3.5 cm and have “an arrow” to ride. The center could be removed completely if you for instance ran a 3 gyro setup (F7 is fast enough) on the rim? Probably for good reasons – I’m curious. If you don’t have the time to comment – nice f.work guys 🙂

Very interesting. A small correction – the power to overcome drag goes up with the cube of the speed.
This is awesome, to solve aerodynamic stability why not get a gyro from like a rc motorcycle to buffer out the counter actions the motors are making so that the engines can focus on the speed plus streamline the fuselage, like a blood vain on a buck knife. Allowing the wind to be trapped in a vortex channel to allow less disturbance buy the blades. And also use a 360° FPV cam to watch on all sides the disturbances!

At 90 degree camera tilt Yaw becomes inverted roll and roll becomes yaw. Any compensation done on the sticks/controller for flying it or just the hell with it and fly the damn thing?
Also, with dual cam integrated flight controllers now out you could toss a micro camera at the base that is basically zero uptilt for landing while the other camera is at the nose and pointed where it needs to be for speed runs.
Thanks! “why not move the batteries out under the individual motors” I had thought of this concept, but I think it came down to a moment of inertia issue. The motors will have a harder time keeping the quad stable, therefore speed would suffer. I agree that the batteries are a problem. Too bad we can’t order them in whatever shape we want 🙂
No compensation on the sticks and the camera angle is actually kinda low at 45-55°. Landing isn’t as hard as it seems: I put it into angle mode, remove my goggles and gently land it LOS. I’d like to put a metal spike in the tail so I can hover about 10 feet off the ground, disarm, and lawn dart the landing.

@Ryan L It would definitely fly like a pig. Is using “engine throttle up/down” to do the steering optimal when trying to achieve a max speed – wouldn’t control surfaces offer a better solution or is the computing power not there yet? Some materials stretch/tighten with electrical currents – for simplicity imagine the skimpiest squirrel suit f.x. “armpit” fabric electrified (no servo lags).
Another wacky thought when stability is the main problem – why run the main weight in a fixed setup. Imagine a kite-surfer equipped with a fixed pole instead of a line, trying to control the kite that propels him – impossible at high speed. The wind-surfer on the other hand solves the problem by reducing the “engine size/sail) and brings it in close in a fixed frame. It then becomes manageable but the kite-surfer will laugh his ass off when it comes to raw speed. Have you gone down this road?

Had to pop this one in as well: why do you want electricity to be the carrier if it requires the engines to be positioned at the corners. Why not use a central engine – with air carrying the power out to the props (if propshafts are ruled out)? Does the compresionability of air make it too slow for direction control? (pardon the crp spellings)
Loved the interview! I have a question though! Wouldn’t angle mode set at 90 degrees ensure that you’re always horizontal at full nose down?
Why do both designs have the props in turbulent air? Don’t try to strap four props to a tapered bullet and expect it to fly like a tapered bullet. Make the shape of the nose like a Phillips tip screwdriver smoothed and pulled out on each edge to feed clean uninterrupted airflow greased lighting slick into the props. Both designs are simply not the most efficient. If you drag each model through water you would get cavitation (bubbles) or drag at a low speed. Fluid dynamics for anything that flies is best tested in water. Good Luck guys
Airships! Check out Aerodynamik of Airships. There are methods to predict lift and drag of
rotationally symmetrical Bodys. Problem will be the interaction between body and the relative huge Propellers.
My suggestion would be to steer the 4 fins with ruders. The faster the vehicle becomes the more efficient are ruders…

If in plus config the bottom motor is 100 and the other 3 at 80, why not go 1mm up on the stator on just the bottom motor and half an inch up on its prop? Then at the exact right combo all 4 can be 100%

I just said the heck with it and fly the thing without over thinking it. But I take off and land LOS. There is of course a learning curve.
I should have said drag force, not power. Drag is 1/2 p*v^2*Cd*A. The theory gets you in the ball park, but this stuff is tricky to predict, especially if you can get laminar air flow over a good section of the ship. I never expected to be able to go +150MPH on just 1kW of power. My motors were at 80% of their unloaded KV which was very surprising, right in the peak efficiency sweet spot.
Looks like a rocket ship! I can’t imagine flying that.

I have so much fun flying LOS that I have a bunch of FPV paraphernalia but have only flown FPV few times. I would love to have a race quad to fly LOS.
Do you use ducted propellors? Would this give an increased efficiency or would the extra weight and drag prove to be a problem?

I thought 200+mph was pretty common among rc drones, especially the pulse-jet guys. Did no one think to look on YT first? There are literally metric tons of videos of fast flying. *World record????*

And quick non related question, do all Frsky receiver include the 3pin connector because the description only says bind-plug.
Not all FrSky receivers have a 3-pin connector. Many have a different connector or solder pads only.
I recommend the RXSR receiver or the XM+ if you don’t need telemetry.
@Joshua Bardwell Ah those RXSR have a link in the description for the 5-pin cable, sweet thats what i was looking for.
Seems like none of the receivers come with the cables and i couldnt find them so that is solved now 🙂

In regard to turbulence, wouldn’t adding vortex generators work? They are commonly used on aircraft. The vortex generators could also be adjusted and/or retracted based on speed.

So he mentioned that there are airfoils on the arms. At what point is this considered a 4 prop “plane” rather than a quad-copter? Is it purely the fact that quads use varying thrust to change direction? Personally I would have said when your design is intended to give lift.
Any criteria that depends on intent is ripe for abuse. It just leads to competitors sneaking lift in without “intending it”. As for the definition of a quadcopter…. ask Guinness.
Would it disqualify it from the record to add wings?

Unfortunately when you have wings and lift its a PLANE! When you want call it a drone or quad there have to be NO wings…. That explanes why are you able to use 100% power for thrust and 0 for stability which is made by wings… so again PLANE!
