The arenas definitely need to be bigger. Hopefully eventually courses for these tournaments will be giant and allow for much more compelling races. I think this can become a huge sport if the drones get a little bigger as well.

I know. I saw that and knew I couldn’t play this game. I guess the technology is not that well perfected yet and sport is only in it’s infancy. Notice how there are so few spectators for no one knows about it and I just stumbled on it by accident. It is so awesomely fun looking having great potential to develop into something truly great.
They can be in seats too and are probably around the camera area. The sport is so new in it’s infancy and the tech has much further development to go so it’s still a small hobby special interest group of young people. That would be so cool to be young again among this generation into all that I thought as a kid to only be science fiction for we didn’t have high tech yet when the original Nintendo was the so interesting I’d stay up all night. When you get older, the intriguing fascination factor is not so strong to play and play a video game nonstop despite something like the PS4 being like a science fiction dream come true where you might do it for 3 hours instead even if you have time. I don’t think I could watch this on a cell phone, but would rather go see it or watch it on one of those huge $250 4K TV’s widely available now for such a rock bottom price.

It analog instead of digital. Digital has better resolution, but has really bad delay. Analog is older tech, so the res isnt as good. However, there is almost no delay, so they prefer to use that. In fpv drone racing digital would result in a crash 3 seconds before you even knew it happened

They have to use an analog link. It is more robust and has far lower latency. A digital link requires more power, weight and signal processing time(latency) that is generally not acceptable for racing. The cameras they are using are measured in Television lines(TVL). Most are in the 600TVL to 900TVL range. 480 was standard definition TV.
The DJI style drones (these are not drones btw, they cannot fly autonomously) use a digital link for better video quality as split second decisions are not an issue.
Another issue they run into, especially in a giant concrete room, is multipathing. This is the signal getting from the transmitter to the receiver via multiple signal propagation paths. These signals do not reach the receiver at exactly the same time. This causes interference. There are things that can help and reduce multipathing but not eliminate it. An alalog signal is far more tolerant of noise than a digital one.

+A Frog That also makes a lot of sense for I don’t go to any events despite living in a big city for I have the Google Fiber to watch it on and it’s just a $50 a month fee for all my entertainment in this case. Ball games, concerts, and Broadway shows are so expensive where I live and this isn’t NYC, but is the Salt City out West. Lion King Broadway production show tickets at Eccles theater were going for $550 last Fall. I want to see robots and high technology exhibitions more than anything. We have this Illuminate festival in November that is free to walk around viewing experimental electronic and esoteric kind of art in a walking street and inside galleries. A drone racing event would fit right on in Illuminate if it were organized.

No. “Drone” means that there isn’t a human pilot on board. This includes both remote controlled and computer controlled aircraft.
As amazing as these drone pilots are and the prize money at stake you cannot have a spectacle without people. It is like a NPC boring event. There needs to be spectators.

So it’s the area they’re flying in with the metal definitely not helping the feed. DVR footage is always way worse than what the pilot see’s in real time and also apparently this is footage from a ground station? I’ve always wondered why the feed is so bad in these competitions but i guess amongst these comments it is answered. I’m sure there are other factors that come into play.

What an amazing thing that technology has allowed us to do and to be able to make a sport out of it. I think that they will come up with even greater types of competitions in the near future. It is a little tough for the spectators to watch and keep track of.
Maybe future races with base competition on multiple capabilities of the drones, like a race through a small canyon, with placements of repeaters for the pilot to stay in contact with the drone and maybe a race to a high altitude where they have a ballon stationed to have to come within a certain proximity. I don’t know, maybe a competition for lifting capabilities. I love this stuff and just think it is amazing, I would love to get into this but I’m certain that my hand eye coordination isn’t up to speed to compete in this type of race.

To everyone here saying there should be spectators or making fun of them for no one being there watching… Google something like “drone workbench injury” or “drone prop injury”. These things make insane power, and (speaking from personal experience here lol) the props WILL slice through skin like butter. I made a very stupid mistake at one point and tried to hand launch a race drone, cut my finger to the bone like it wasn’t even there. So imagine with these guys awful fpv feeds having thousands of people within the line of fire of that kind of potential? Yeah people would get hurt at every race.

Nothing wrong with the camera. It’s the fact that the signal from the camera needs to be carried to the goggles without any latency. The quality suffers because of this.

I wonder if there is a solution to the FPV latency issue. The quality is horrendous. Maybe each drone should be mandated to have an HD streaming camera for better playback during re-run shots. Even if the drone operators themselves get to look at static.
