The California State Fair recently hosted the first ever Drone Nationals–a FPV quadcopter racing competition that brought together pilots from all around the world. After two days of races and freestyle stunt performances, we chat with the event’s director and the competition’s eventual winner about the developing sport of FPV aerial racing.

Well done event Chad! I appreciate your incorporation of government agencies that have really had a sour taste in their mouth about RC vehicles in general and now focused on shutting down hobby drones. Your professionalism goes a long way to help them recognize this as a safe and controlled hobby with only a few outliers that need enforcement.
Remember folks as aircraft pilots (manned or unmanned) you are responsible for knowing and obeying flight rules.

I wonder if there’s a way to make the live video feed coming from the drones a bit clearer/less static. It’s good enough to the point where you can tell where you’re going, but it would benefit the racers much much more if the image was clear and stable without the static hiccups. Since every second counts in a race, these split second static hiccups may mess them up. Hopefully the technology gets better.

How do you get rid of all the flicker and interference on the FPV Glasses? The Drones film such great video, but the streaming seems really unstable and just plain bad.

+TomVaillencourt You don’t, not if you want near-zero latency. Not yet anyways. It’s an analog signal (usually transmitted at 5.8GHz), it will take interference from all kinds of things.
They have separate action cameras on the quads for the sweet Youtube footage.
+u_wot_m8 It doesn’t really bother the racers. It’s fine enough most of the time. They care more about having low latency.
There are better techniques coming up though, since the sport has blown up. It’s just very weight-limited as well. They need to miniaturize everything.
Thats tough on racers. some day we will all look back at our kids doing this in ways we can’t yet imagine, and they will have no idea how we did it.

hi. we are a group of first semester engineering students and we were assigned to design and create a drone built for racing. what do you feel would be something you, as drone racers, would like your drone to be as or to have? (Material, motors, cameras, props, etc) thank you for your time.
This “Bruce-Lee” dude is a biggest KISS-ASS (“Butt-Licker”, for less sophisticated) I’ve seen in the entire Cosmos (which is basically my moms basement hocked-up to the Holy Of Hollies, The Internet..).. I mean he was doing an interview on a freaking Football Field..! Weren’t there any Jocks that could’ve weggied him, or tied him naked to one of the poles..?! Where are those half-wit oafs when you need them..
The fpv quality needs to improve, wonder how they can fly with that resolution.
All we need now is floating powerups!
