FPV Racing / Formation Mini Quads – Melbourne Multirotor 2015
Some close action FPV racing and formation flying scenes from a few weeks ago. Great weather, great flying and a lot of fun. The FPV Footage was is from Thomas’ Minion 220 mini quad. The Slow Motion footage was shot with the iPhone 6 running at 720p @ 240fps

I’m not a quad guy, but I do like watching the racing from the pilots
perspective. Not sure if it was too bright to see any LED’s but I couldn’t
see any. If it’s too much daylight killing the LED shine, how about
something that stands out like day glow around the rear arms or just
something to make them stand out for the pilot behind (and their audience –
ie me) to view. Still enjoyed, keep ’em comin.
+M Smith Thanks, some really cool aircraft stuff coming soon, I have
amazing gliding project that should be awesome 🙂 They all had LEDs but the
sunlight kills it. In the Original video you can just see the LEDs but
Youtube’s compression kills the footage. It’s just enough for the pilots to
see the other quad even on bright days like this
Cool slow mo footage, interesting to see the different angles you were
flying :)

Really a great video Paul! Loved the racing action, slow motion, and the
music.. While I don’t have one, I like the quads. Does the camera move to
compensate for the different angles of the quad during flight, and what
googles are you guys using/prefere now? Thanks so much for posting and
sharing with us!! W
+Walt G Thanks Walt 😀 The camera doesn’t move, but having said that we
have the both the FPV and HD Camera tilted up 10 Degrees. As far as Goggles
go, Thomas is using the Original SkyZone’s and I’m either using the same or
the Latest V02 SkyZone’s. Glad you enjoyed the video 😀

He’s a fantastic pilot if he can control his frustration every time he
crashes . . but he’s getting there slowly
Tell him that being humble is the hardest trait in life. Then maybe
“challenge excepted” then he’ll get cross with himself for being cross:)
Its just a “I know I can do this, why am I messing up” kind of frustration
im sure.

Those slow mo-effects are awesome, they look like the bullet scenes from
the Matrix. Now you need to add a ‘GoPro array effect’ and it will be off
the hook!

Its pretty amazing. I was complaining to a mate that I wish it could do
240fps @ 1080p instead of 720p, he then reminded me “It is a phone” lol

They look really funny in Slow Motion, creeping accross the screen at a 30
degree Angle to everything else in the Universe…
It’s been pretty much unflyable up here lately, with the stuff off the
edges of what the Weather-Gods are giving to the Coastal Strip – payback
for their failing to vote Green apparently…(?) !

Yeah, they call that “Bosses’ Weather”, fine all week, lousy on the
weekend…
The local KKK Festival (Kilted Keltic Klowns) is on here this weekend…,
last year it was dedicated to Cornwall and it sleeted and drizzled for 2
days and the top Temperature didn’t get above 5 Degrees for 2 days…; this
year it’s all about W(h)ales, and there’s a Severe Weather Warning with
100mm to 350mm expected over the Weekend.
Kosmic Scoreboard Effect, I guess, they keep trying to pretend they live in
Britain, they get all dressed up in the traditional Pommy Woolen Kilts &
a”Fairisle” knitted Jumpers, ready to Kirk the Tartan and eat the
Haggis…, singing the auld Highland Dirges…; then they get all cranky
and downcast when they whistle up some authentic “Celtic” Weather…,
because they really NEED some sparkly Australian Sunshine to better bring
out the Cash-Cows (Oopsie, should’ve said “Tourists”) to watch the “Clans”
marching behind the Skirl o’ th’ Pipes, and the Drag & Paradidle o’ yonder
Snare Drums…!

Well, as usual, it was the Climate Science Deniers in SE QLD copped most of
the Worst, and 5 of them died since yesterday, and the Coastal Strip of
Tourist Traps have Bin-Hammered…; whereas today there’s 4/8 Clouds here,
following 31mm of well-mannered Rain all yesterday and last night….
Being about a mile west of the Watershed, on the Great Divide, is really
excellent for avoiding the Weather which projects inland while otherwise
busy beating up the Coast….

I’ve noticed some of the pics on FB just insane weather, i never realise so
many were without power etc

Yeah, being dependant on the Grid is very convenient when it’s all up and
running, and on the occasions when a Stand-Alone system glitches then one
gets to figure out how to fix it without help…; but when the Grid is down
there’s nothing to be done but wait for somebody else to put it back
together and, to be honest, the Grid fails a lot more often than my
Pyramidful of old Car Batteries and an Inverter does…(once in 15 years I
had to go a night without Power, the +ve Battery Clamp on the Inverter had
corroded through it’s Cable & my son “shouted” me a new pair of Clamps…).
Apparently Elon Musk has launched House-Lighting Lithium Batteries which he
claims will be cheaper than Lead-Acid…; though it’s hard to see what a
House needs Low-Weight Batteries for, but I guess there’s more Lead in the
World than there is Lithium…
But, with a stand-alone system one gets a little thrill of satisfaction
EVERY TIME a flick of a switch causes the Light, Radio or TV/DVD to come
on..; whereas with the Grid about the best one can feel is to be grateful
that it still works, mixed with apprehension about how huge the Bill will
be…

weather is about to go downhill here, but having said that the sun is out
and when I pick up Thomas from school (60min from now), we’ll hopefully get
to squeeze in some flying 🙂 Man Thomas and I would so love to come to
Flite Fest, I was discussing it with the wife we might aim for next years
even since there is no hope of the wife getting time from work atm.
Irrespective the US is on Thomas’ wish list since there is so much he wants
to see in your beautiful country 🙂
Totally understand about traveling. Australia is on my short list of
places to visit, but I fear is further than a year or two year away. Hope
to meet you guys some day! As always, keep up the great work on flying and
