Kevin Haelterman is one of the two cofounders of LuGus Studios, the creator of Liftoff. Kevin and I chat at length about the values that FPV simulators bring to FPV, especially in the current times when getting together in person is incredibly difficult.
FPV simulators do more than just help you fly better. They allow new pilots to get their start. They allow entire communities to hang out virtually. They allow racing to happen asynchronously. They give a creative outlet to those that want to do more than just fly.
Perfect for my Sunday evening.
Thanks, Mike. <3
My first flight my frame snapped in half around 20 seconds into it with no idea what I built. Then I found the simulators. They are a huge help. I’m no pro lol but I can fly a quad copter
Velocidrone ftw for racing. By far the best which is why al the top pros use it ?
Thanks Kevin for this incredible simulator! That’s I think the best buy that I make in my like
I play as many sims as I can get. So far it’s four, Liftoff, Velocidrone and DRL on the computer and Drone on my Phone on my cellphone.
Seen even some performance improvement on Liftoff and it’s very comparable to Velocidrone and with better graphics.
Kevin is a genuine legend, great scalp man looking forward to this

Nice opening! 🙂 Velocidrone FTW!
Such a frank and brave interview, calling out the strengths AND weaknesses of your product, your vision and your results.
Proud to be a part of this community 😀
I like Liftoff but Velocidrone has the edge in physics and maps are way better than liftoff. Graphics don’t matter to me in sims. I can fly a 5″ quad inside a house in Velocidrone with the expansion. I can’t in Liftoff. This is how I learned so now I can fly a quad anywhere. Liftoff does not have any maps I can fly inside buildings.
Video / Audio quality is a big step up from the last one of these I watched
No, Liftoff is not the best simulator. Liftoff, in my honest opinion, seems more like an Arcade-ish Simulator whereas other simulators seem to fly more realistic to the real world.
Don’t get me wrong, Liftoff is very fun and I have hundreds and hundreds of hours flying in it, however I feel that a pilot can get much more experience and “practice” from flying other sims that do a better job in a few key areas.
That intro though ??
“It’s called a ‘roll'” ? ? ? ? bro I’m ded; like 2v per cell man ?
What an amazing interview! Liftoff is such a good simulator. Wouldnt be in FPV without it!
man. 12 mins in and had 5 ad breaks. grr
I have all the sims…I play DCL the most
Love Liftoff! After spending hours on it I was able to fly acro right off the bat without crashing too hard. I tried acro once without any kind of practice first and just flipped over and crashed. Went back and trained up on Liftoff and was quite successful. Still use it first if I want to try a new trick before burying a $200 quad. Thank you for that
I feel you Mike. There have been so many times when troubleshooting or repairing when I just felt like boxing everything up and giving it all away or tossing it in a dumpster. For all the info out there, there is still things that are unknown. And the fragility of some things. ESCs burning out or boards that just stop working because maybe a FET or diode died. It’s maddening. Other activities are so much simpler. Take lifting for example, In my garage gym, you can either lift the weight or you can’t. Simple.
+1? ?
