ImpulseRC Helix Drone – The Complete Thoughts, Setup PIDs
Essentially the Helix is an Insane frame that is well thought out, Custom Electronics that’s designed to work with the Helix with minimal fuss and effort. Basically one hell of a high performance mini quad.
Unlike many quads on the market this quad takes the fuss out of working out what will and won’t work with your quad. Basically everything works together perfectly . . what else would you expect from ImpulseRC.
Helix Brief History
– – – – – – – – – –
We have no real idea when ImpulseRC started work on the Helix but we can say we first found out early 2016 that something was in the works.
The first time we saw the Helix was in May 28th 2016 when Flits and Sean came over to hand deliver the Helix to Thomas and see what he could do with the prototype. Let me firstly say this quad looked nothing like a Prototype and both of us were blown away. Best of all they felt the quad had heaps of work and development that needed to be done.
A few months later we were told that Thomas would be permitted to use the Helix at the Australian Nationals. Keep in mind at this stage he had never raced it let alone even showed anyone the quad.
For a week and a half he basically started doing race training on his own flying the helix through race gates for the first time.
The quad had a practice session on the Friday of the Aussie Drone Nationals, followed by qualifying on the Saturday where it qualified 3 fastest quad. At this stage Thomas’ spare Helix was damaged and he couldn’t risk trying to qualify faster.
Having qualified 3rd fastest in the Top 32 Thomas was confident in the quad, but knew he needed to stay out of trouble where possible. All that needed to be done was to qualify 1st or 2nd in the next 3 heats and that would guarantee him a place in the final.
He managed to not only win every heat but also go through to win the Final, giving the ImpulseRC Helix its first ever outing the win at the 2016 Australian Drone Nationals.
The Helix went on to win every race Victoria for the rest of the year, with the exception of the Drone X Championships. The Helix qualified as the fastest quad but the Drone X race was for 18 and over and as such Thomas couldn’t compete in that event.
I’ll add more info and links here shortly.
The following at The UTT Runs – All of them have been submitted but we’re still waiting on MultiGP to process and confirm if they accept these runs. So far only UTT3 has been accepted.

Always a pleasure to listen to you guys having a father/son chat!
I wish i had moments like that with my dad when i was young 🙂
Thanks for the sweet input about your helix setups!
Have a great weekend and keep on FPVing
you guys are really great, keep it up! Keep representing the southern
hemisphere
Thorough. Love it :-)
Dang I need you guys to do my voice-overs for my vids. Haha. My accent is
ridiculous, yours is super cool :).
I’m interested in the Session 5 mount once you have it ready. I’ve been
flying one exposed and kinda beat it up too much.
Perfect timing has I’m getting my helix this week, it’s currently somewhere
between Australia and Canada ??! You guys are the ones that made me
interested in this frame in the first place, so a big thank you and keep up
the good work guys ✌️
thomas.. you haveny had any issues with f40 and 5051 props.? ive heard that
f50 can burn up with heavier props?
wow MY MOUTH IS DROOLING wanting this frame
“GoPro Mount – Links coming soon.”….. Plz??
Hay Paul. I tested my immersion power meter against Fred’s commercial unit
at flying and found it was 3db out. I would not trust the reading on the
meter until you get it calibrated.
Great video guys. Sadly my Helix is still unbuilt as work has been pretty
full on and I want to be able to take my time and enjoy putting it
together. I’ll be joining the club real soon though as soon as the weather
improves in the UK.
Look forward to more vids and as always, excellent flying!
Nice video guys!! :)
Great video! What Thomas has achieved with the Helix speaks volumes for
both the frame and of course his ability.
I know I’m in the minority, but I had a lot of issues with my 2 Helixes and
recently decided to move away from the frame. They flew fantastically when
they were up and running, but I struggled to keep them in the air. I crash
pretty hard and pretty often so in the end I’m probably not the target
audience for the frame and that’s fine. I will say ImpulseRC took fantastic
care of me as I tried to work through my issues and I have immense respect
for them and what they do. I still love my Alien and (that thing is tough
as nails!) and I’ll absolutely be keeping an eye on what they do next.
On a different note, I’m really quite gobsmacked seeing the PIDs Thomas is
running! Is that for BF 3? In particular, he runs his I values so much
lower than myself. Would love to hear thoughts on the sort of feel Thomas
is after when tuning and in particular why he prefers running his I values
on the lower end of the spectrum.
Cheers guys, see you at Round 1 :-)
thanks for another great video, iv learnt a lot from you guys.
i don’t understand how to read your PID’s can you please simplify them into
PID values as I’m not sure what RCR and SR are?
Its been a while since I have listened to the soothing voices of the
Bitmatta boys … much love 😀 Love the commentary!
very thorough review, impulse lead the way
You guys need to rent a radar gun, I want to know how fast this is xD
Footage looks *insane*
where did you get the yellow cover for the go pro Session?
