Liftoff: Drone Racing is now available on PS4 and XBox One. But that means you have to play with a game controller. Let’s look at some of the features Liftoff added some to make up for the deficiencies of a game controller.
The first half of this video has some frame skips. That is the result of my laptop that I used to record the video, not the result of the game. If you look at the video starting at @ it’s absolutely smooth.
Here are some things Liftoff is working on to improve the console experience: improved default settings for beginners; improved blueprint setups in career mode; Mode 1 controller support (throttle on right); 0 throttle at center stick feature; rewind feature; balancing difficult of some career races. Liftoff is also looking into how they can support RC controllers, but this is a much more difficult thing to accomplish.
If you have the money and the determination, some people are buying the Titan 2 adapter which is reported to allow the use of any HID joystick (including an OpenTX RC controller) with XBox and Playstation. THIS IS NOT SUPPORTED BY OR ENDORSED BY LIFTOFF! If you want to give it a try:
I find using a better xbox controller really helps.
I find it impossable to go back to the stock xbox remote with DCL
Ghetto fix but hot glue some transmitter stick ends onto the xbox controller sticks and it isn’t too bad, The return to centre throttle might annoy people who fly thumbs but they should be pinching anyway… :p Did this for well over a year as my actual transmitter wouldn’t connect to a pc easily. Definitely close enough to be enjoyable and get some practice…
Why bother.
This simulator shouldnt be on the market without tx support. Its just a game right now
I use to use Xbox controller on computer for liftoff till I figured out how to get emax transmitter to work on PC liftoff.
Was hard using Xbox controller
I wonder how good it could be if you hack the controller, 3D print extensions for the “gimbals” and I’ve seen people use rubber bands to bias or preload one of the sticks.
Absolute garbage
hmm. you are being very generous methinks.
So, DRL on PS4 does work with a Taranis controller.
Microsoft has already said no to transmitters when dcl came to console but Sony on the other hand ? to transmitters I have both lift off amd dcl on the ps4 and dcl is where it’s at liftoff just fees so weird even with my modified ps4 controller
F-Zero is the grandfather of futuristic racing games
Have you tried DCL? They support zero throttle at center joystick and RC controllers. I was considering getting Liftoff as well because as a newbie to the FPV hobby I love being able to get sim time in right on the couch! After watching this I may give the devs more time to catch up with a few updates or catch it on sale!
It’s the same problem I had with DRL on PlayStation 4. It felt nothing like the real thing because of the spring loaded throttle and the crazy sensitivity. It’s not fun at all for me. I want it to feel at least somewhat like the real thing. I played it for about 15 minutes and gave up
DRL is not out on PS4, however I assume you meant DCL.
Any permission of this kind are considered on a case by case basis, and allowing them for one game does not mean they are available to every game and developer. The Liftoff team is currently trying to get similar permissions.
600 million console gamers, if only 1% of them buy it, you reach an audience 3 times bigger than the FPV community. Imagine if a fraction of them stick around and get into FPV.
That’s why we bother 🙂
I started with Xbox controller on PC. Basicly had to learn to fly again from scratch when I finally got proper rc controller.
I have Liftoff on PC and DCL on Xbox. The. I realized DRL and Liftoff are on console tooz
The frame rate and tearing look awful. PCMR!!!!
Why would they lock the rates in career mode? Also why is that attitude/direction osd always on?
Liftoff is tediously difficult to record, I’ve tried it many times enough to know that.
Can we mention that DCL Game on PS4 (not sure about xbox) has tx support and full PID and FF tuning. I am currently using my frsky xlite s and it is awesome.
As mentioned before, no FPV sim has shipped with transmitter support at launch, DCL added it a long time after release, going through the same process as we are. So yes, you could say we are doing exactly as DCL did.
Liftoff on consoles already offers full FC tuning.
Career mode locks rates so everybody is on equal footing.
Please read the first comment.
Endeed, however you can still change them in the career mode by editing the drone setup in the Workbench. It puts the player in a position where they know they are editing a drone (and forced them to make a copy first). This should prevent new players from accidentally making the standard career setups unplayable, by messing with settings they don’t yet understand.
OSD can be turned of in game options.
@LuGus Studios hey no worries, we understand, most of us are already flyers here not noobs so most of us will not buy untill tx support it is not personal against game. guys here are not looking for game we are looking for fun sim on consoles. I think your game will be the one. Good luck and appreciate response.
I want this so freakin bad, but yeah gotta wait for transmitter support sadly. For me using a game pad is gonna teach bad habits and incorrect muscle memory. That being said this could be a really cool way of bringing new folks to Fpv.
Sidenote to the devs: could you make the throttle work from half stick? early in the dcl console version it helped alot before transmitter support was allowed.
Thanks for the video Joshua 🙂
First off..what would correct 90% of the issue would be for liftoff to make an update to have zero throttle DCL has it …DRL has it why liftoff thought it was a good idea to just have the quad go blasting away constantly beyond me…all is needed is an update to zero throttle it…i fly DRL and. DCL both with no issue…we console owners pay twice the price for games and get $#1t on…plus I hope liftoff don’t think we didn’t notice we didn’t get all the maps available.
In my opinion Liftoff shouldn’t have wasted their money and time to port their simulator to a console that doesn’t allow to use a radio like the ones we use in our drones. They wasted their time and they are making people waste their money in a simul-thing that won’t allow people switching to a real qwad. If there are paths to get anyway I think this is the path that leads to the starting point. I can only think that this is a shame.
YOU should have clicked the zero throttle option in the settings…and DCL would have been fine…if not then it may be just a you issue….because the same update to zero the throttle would fix liftoff..obviously the liftoff designers are just slow and lazy.
@Joshua Bardwell career is single player brother…equality wouldn’t matter lol…its cool man ..ive never even flew real fpv quad racer I just can’t afford it..love your vids man and your a cool dude.
This is not a simulator at all this is just dumb ???I love the PC version but this is just mario cart on crack ?
@William Kenimer Thanks I’ll try that. I got it when it was released on day one and maybe they didn’t have that update yet. I haven’t played it since
meh
So everyone is on equal footing unless you know how to change it? If it can be changed, maybe some basic preset high/low rate selection options in the pause menu would be beneficial to beginners who won’t yet understand rates but would prefer reduced sensitivity. DRL’s stock rate selection springs to mind which is both fair and adjustable.
Regarding the osd maybe my question should of been why is it on by default? The majority of pilots don’t use it. (A minor point but an annoyance I’ve always had with liftoff)
I would make the argument that arcade racing games are a valid end in and of themselves, and that some people get inspired by arcade racing to get into sim racing or the real thing. The Liftoff sim on console will not be for hardcore FPV enthusiasts until it can support a RC controller. But that doesn’t mean it’s worthless. We have to be able to reach out to those outside the hardcore enthusiast community if we are going to grow.
On top, while our “business” is not your business, I can assure you we did not waste any money, the details of that I’m not going to share. Likewise, all this time we have continued to release free update after update on PC, so I’m sure none of our fans have suffered 😉
At the end of the day we are a business, and no one could argue that we are wasting money by creating and selling new products vs only releasing free updates to an old one. For as long as we have been part of the FPV world (2015) we’ve only sold you one product. As a result I’m not convinced it’s appropriate to tell us how we should spend our time and money, and how we are wasting that of others. PC and console are different markets that reach different audiences. We are slowly reaching complete market saturation by exclusively targeting the FPV community and its a perfectly viable strategy to expand our reach, either by targeting more audiences, or by promoting the growth of the existing one. We do both.
– Zero throttle at center stick has been confirmed for the first patch.
– Console games have different prize standards and cost structures. Liftoff on consoles launched at a below average price for a console game.
– Liftoff on consoles is not a port of Liftoff on PC, both are considered different products, both versions have content and features that the other version does not have.
@LuGus Studios But do you realize that people learning drone racing for consoles, will waste their time learning to fly, and then they will feel frustrated when switching to real kwad? They will learn nothing. Moreover when discussing with PC gamers they will realize that console version is subpar to pc version, and without counting that if they race with others in pc they wont get the same times. The first feature in a game, simutator, etc, is playability, and for that the game controler is the key. This had been that way for decades. And again this is an opinion. Time will tell…
Kind of no point of buying this game . It is far away from the real world . They have to incorporate our own controllers some how.
I 3d printed sticks that pressed onto a dualshock 4 to learn…. the only downside is i had too much muscle memory and i had to change my tango 2 to center stick on the throttle as well
That is so bad
@LuGus Studios And thats why I said… console gamers are always getting $#!T on.
@Quad Squad FPV trust me it helps..its the same as liftoff for xbox/ps4…it doesn’t have a zero throttle option so your constantly fighting against it…let me know if it helps it will be awesome if it does.
I think with a few updates this can and will be better then dcl this feels like your actually flying on earth where dcl feels like the moon ? yes it sucks you cant use your tx yet but dcl was the same way when it first came out once that is added this will be my go to simulator
Hi Joshua, do you know if Liftoff will implement the possibility of being able to connect a real radio transmitter?
in this case I buy it immediately.
Thanks … forgive my english 🙂
They say they are trying but obviously only time will tell.
I’ve been using my X7 on my PS4 for months now playing DCL (drone champions league) no extra downloads it just works.
Got liftoff the other day. First thing I thought was the stick tension on a ps4 is too high and that the whole throttle is in way less space than it would be in real life. I am really disappointed watching you try and fly in your yard level. It is and was supposed to be a simulator not a drone flying arcade game. Not going to teach anyone and might actually turn people off the hobby. You should have done beta testing or something with them. The fact that your face pops up in the corner to tell us how to play means you were paid probably quite alot, and should have checked that it wasn’t a failure.and that fpv radios would work. Thanks your reviews do help I just wish you reviewed this before I got it and I wouldn’t have purchased it
When I was playing and your face popped up I thought my “name is Joshua bardwell and you are going to learn something today”. I didn’t learn anything that day
@LuGus Studios look…im sorry if I came off sounding like an ass…you guys did a incredible job..with console version of liftoff..i just get tired of feeling left out just because I don’t own a pc…i have 3 friends that have liftoff on pc that’s how I knew how much content was missing ..i didn’t mean to offend keep up the wonderful work?
BOO!!!
If you compare latest version of Velocidrone and Liftoff which one do you recommend -which one is more realistic ?
If you play ps4 dcl its best with a controller it suks as well. its bad enough that had i known i prolly wouldnt have baught it im prolly not going to get the new game for that reason allone
For whom didn’t experienced FPV before, better spend money and time on a real beginner drone bundle. This is just not even closer to what you should get. Different story on a PC of course.
