In this part of the ZMR250 low cost mini quadcopter racing drone build we add the arms to the main frame and do most of the wiring. Two options are demonstrated — simply joining the wires directly and using a very simple and cheap home-made power distribution board.
Remember, while stocks last, viewers can request a free el-cheapo PDB by sending me an email with their name and address. I only have enough PCB for about 10-20 boards so it’s first-come, first served.
Stay tuned for part 4 when we’ll install the Naze32 board and the FPV camera/transmitter then set things up.
you should tidy your bench
WHERES PART 4 mate?@RCModelReviews
Nice work on the series so far, I’ve started my first ZMR250 build and look
forward to watching your final video!
With the XT60 connectors, plug a male into the female while you solder the
female – this means that if you apply too much heat, and the connector
starts to melt, it won’t move the position of the bullets, and it’ll still
connect perfectly :).
Hello Bruce great vids …. Now i prefer the longer videos lol i HATE 2
minute long vids then have to wait a week for another 2 min video But thats
jus me i like watchin vids all at once .. I know the reason ppl post a ton
of short vids is to get others to come back well bullshit to that … Post
longer better detailed videos ppl will always come back for more….
Besides by the time you do all the bloody editing of 6 videos the one long
one would already be done lol…. Love your vids tho…. Ummm you still
banned from flyin??? Cant you build your own air strip?? Thanks bruce
Hi Bruce
Have you done the fourth video yet? Thanks for all your knowledge you share
with us.
cheers Johan
I always love your videos. Keep them coming. I’ll probably build this exact
quad once I’m finished with my skywalker build.
Where to find that power board or make one?
I am really looking forward to watching part 4
Tank you my friend … :)
The copper PCB board can be found on eBay fairly easily if there’s none
left, just search for “copper double sided PCB circuit board”, there’s
plenty of sellers available. :)
Hey Bruce, I just ordered some FR4 circuit boards on amazon. Can I simply
scratch the positive/negative dividing line in the center of the board or
do I need to etch it?
Also after scoring and breaking the circuit board down to the correct
dimensions, do you smooth the edges up with some fine sand paper or
something, or just not worry about it? Thanks
REALLY a great 3 part series!!
I’m going to use the phrase hippie solder for no Pb at work from now on.
Maybe the same for water clean flux. Thanx
Has many unnecessary screws (16x) 8 are enough to hold, the amount will not
avoid breaking the frame!
What are the specs for the stand-offs and where can i get them (link
please)
Bruce, for putting the arms on, I put all the screws up through the bottom
plate, I put a small rubber band around each set of 4 screws as I put them
in, and lay it down on the table. Then I just put the arms and the mid
plate on to it.
I after watching all 4 videos I am going to build this. How ever you ha e
done a doc flight with it and looks great fun. How ever can’t find the
video about installing the fpv. I was looking at getti bf some fatshark
goggles. When using these so you need any more equipment or is just camera
antenna and goggles
For those masochists out there you can build a dodecacopter or the
icosacopter. None of those 2 motor cop-outs. If it doesn’t look like two
squid tangled together you aren’t trying hard enough.
How much did it all cost togever
Bruce, Where did you purchase the 4 channel servo tester? and is it a
specific brand, all the ones i’ve found are only 3 channel, Thanks for the
great build videos…
The fact that ive had 7 beers and im wanting to learn “how to” build these,
you totally make sense my friend, i just want to say your videos are
absolutly amazing and deserve more views.. its a shame you feel as though
you feel the need to rush, but saying that you just need a tape measure to
fis your rushed vids, again thanks for everything what you do hardly any if
any do the same.
+JP Prince also i only just started watching your vids by the way, when you
say “this is kinda off a bodge” say that taking a little more time you can
perfect it, there no disliking aat all in your vids there amazing, just
need some common sense
Bruce, the zmr gives you steel screws for the standoffs, however the
blackout kit supplies you with nylon screws to provide a cheap failure
point. My first crash broke every one of the nylon screws on the standoffs,
and I immediately wondered if I would be risking damage to my frame by
upgrading to steel fasteners. In your experience, does the intentional
failure point of the nylon screws on the blackout frame actually provide
any benefit?
What temp do you solder at?
I just found out why Bruce’s other You Tube channel is called “xjet” 🙂 …
“A New Zealand home handyman’s bid to construct a cruise missile in his
shed has made global headlines…
It was reported this week that internet developer Bruce Simpson was
building a missile from parts ordered over the internet and shipped through
Customs.
The 49-year-old, who lives near Auckland, said he would not use the missile
for terrorism, but to test a home-made engine called the X-Jet, which he
had already test-fired and hoped to license.”
if you buy CW and CCW motors… do you still have to cross the wires from
the motors to the ESCs??
Any thoughts about body kits to make these sleek looking? …and where can
you get a custom body kit if they do exist for these?
I’m new to the Quadcopters in general. But I really wanted to build my
own! My grand kids think that grandpa can’t make anything cool but I think
this will change there minds! These are done really well. Thanks for
giving us old retired folks something to do! …Lol
I made a similar PDB out of a piece of circuit board from an old CD-ROM
drive 😛
Just sanded the coating off and tinned the exposed coper. Works great!
Great video Bruce, very helpful I’ve just built my emax 250 full carbon!
Keep ’em coming!
Thank you for not speeding up! It really helps with following everything
when you are new.
thanks for making theese Videos i raly enjoy it and i learn something
School has to be that way :D
Bruce, I would like to know your thoughts on having the bolts that hold the
arms on come up from the botom plate rather than going down from the top
plate. I lnow people will say well if you loose a nut the bolt can fall
out. Buit it would make assembly FAR easier!
The way you built it, if you loose a nut the bolt cant fall out, but the
nuts are nyloc inserts and I doubt you will have one vibrate loose.
hi i have decided to start my own drone building just like yours and i know
absolutely nothing about drons and parts like flight control boards and im
from potchefstroom south Africa, Butttt must say your videos has help me
do wanders and i would like to thank you lots and lots thanks.
Does the BEC’s on all 4 ECS cause any issue? should I remove the
power/ground wires and only use the signal wires on the other 3?
