Different arm configurations need different tunes AND rates.
Most informative video i have seen in a while?
Braap and steez are best! Zack knows what’s up! Everyone can argue all they want in the end it’s all personal preference and what works best for you. Example, the difference between Le drib and Mr. Steele. Zack is le drib, vanrover is Steele. You forgot to add that a heavier quad with power has more velocity in which you have more time to perform a trick. I personally would go xlabs Braap for race, ummagawd remix for freestyle. ?
I think he said our technology isnt good enough for physics to matter?
Great discussion guys ?
It seemed frustrating for the racer kid. Everyone kept talking over him. Meanwhile I imagine he felt that he had to answer to numbers not opinions.
I liked the part about how longer arms give more leverage and slow down the response, in my case gives me more control. My experience as an inexperienced flyer is that most of what the industry has settled on doesn’t work for me. I make my own frames from crashed quads and parts kits and I typically end up with 240-260 mm for 5″ machines. 220-210 are too twitchy. I can successfully fly a 250 with 5″. Taking the exact same quad and extending the arms 10mm in each direction doesn’t change the weight much. With stretched-X (it sort of came out but I don’t think as definitively as I experience it is that) by lengthening the pitch axis they’re getting more control/resolution of the throttle.
If any frame makers want to pay attention to what this avid but less skillful flyer needs is very light slightly larger builds. My own machines are 300g (without HD) and 250mm. For me lighter and larger with the same power are what’s more durable and more flyable. The industries offerings don’t work for me.
Is there a frame where you can adjust the angle of the arms on the field?
I LOVE F.P.V.
Geometry matters.. the front props distance from rear determines how “dirty” the air is entering the rear props..
” I disagree with both of you” proceeds to make the same points both of them made
I don’t race, but I’d assume the majority of power consumption is in overcoming momentum in turns
Has anyone have an opinion on the ImpulseRc helix frame?
Excellent episode. Had to watch til the end.
Great discussion guys. Thanks. There is still a lot of personal preference involved and much of it is subjective. I learned a lot from everyone’s different approaches and ideas. I now have some new things to try.
the youngsters are faster but the oldsters know the shortcut 😉
they should fly alex his racing copters ! i think bottom mounted lipos with a go pro on top of the frame are extreamly fun to fly freestyle with it ! other than that i am a racer ;D
I’m convinced now even more with the stater motor size references and all this fantastic explanations about so many aspects. In a year we are all going to be flying and racing combo split HD cams on 4” props on massive motors we would now think proper for 5-6” quads but on ultralight 180mm frames. Someone make, this damn qwaad for me to buy! Serious I’m right aren’t I? A quad with so many amps to spare? And the racer in s blue shirt likes more expo on pitch but doesn’t want to actually have to set the expo on his pitch higher….So he enjoys a stretched X. Doesn’t that make sense? The tech has broken through the thrust weight stability game so I want it now.
I seriously don’t get the people who say Vanover’s acting cocky. The guy has the wins to prove what he says carries some substance. Both Stingy and Zach were talking down to him and disregarding the experience that he has gained. On smaller tracks, the cap’n has the skills to zip around with an under pitched prop with a lightweight setup whereas a heavy setup would help a pilot with lesser skills. I would rather listen to someone who wins actual races than the others with regard to racing. Very valid knowledge on the freestyle side of things dropped by Zach and Stingy.
I think bigger frames fly better because the props get cleaner air too.
Captain Vanover looked soooo bored!!
At 28:20 he nailed it. The one that feels the best! Flown all and a stretch X at 500g AUW seems to work for me… it’s a bottom mount, although I do prefer top mount rigs and still fly a qav 220 squishedX on my 3rd bottom plate, no arms needed yet!
Great chat…
Cheers
Love how logically Joshua explains details. Thanks for this discussion guys!
24:00 = moment arm #physics #statics
I feel the kid doesn’t make sense
A frame designer demonstrated that if you tilt a short kwad on a 20 degree angle. The rear prop catches air turbulance from the front. A longer x on the same angle. Lifts the following props through cleaner air. No difference on straight punch out. But, much more efficient for forward movement. I believe this theory.
more challenging doesnt mean slower, but easier has its benefits! if you control it through the small space youll gain/keep more speed but i understand its a balance, different for everyone. i like the downpitch the prop solution for that, simple functional. i think hes got the right idea.
Where do I download. Betafligjt
What are the excact specs of Alex’ race quad?
Vanover`s reaction to the freestylers`s quad weigh was like an F-1 driver reacting to the weight of a nascar lmao.
Really cool to see the priorities the pro`s have, and what the preferences are for not only the types, but the different people.
Me:watches youtube reviews and goes, “hmmm, Hawk 5 or Buzz?”
(had a Hawk in checkout, then bills happened :/ but hey, the weather has been crap anyway so..)
I have learned so much from you guys and some others in the last 5 weeks. I have been taking my time with my actual build. with that being said…I have LOS dialed. happy with my acro progress via sim. I can fly. likely I will have my first two builds done and flown before summers end. much appreciated yallz
This was an amazing discussion!!
Not many videos like this!
Keep up the great!
What I want to know is why line of sight freestyle guys use the battery under strap while FPV freestyle likes it on top ;O
I think what alex is saying is that just because it’s easier for you with a heavier quad doesn’t mean someone who is more skilled can’t do it just as good with alight quad, which would translate to being faster because they’re just better.
You cannot add in skill to this equation. if it’s possible to do then skill has nothing to do with it.
it’s sorta like a fighting video game. Characters are rated how good they are based on what THEY can do… not on what the person playing them can do.
If a character has a 50% damage combo…. just because some people can’t do that combo doesn’t make that character worse. It’s just that that person isn’t skilled enough to do it.
It might be better to have a heavier quad in windy conditions…. but then again this point ijuts made might apply to that as well.
Wow you guys only lightly touched on the main difference between freestyle and racing quads like one time. You didn’t even make it a subject…
Where you mount the battery. You touched on it a little but it was to bulster another point you were making. I was imagining that one of the main points would’ve been where the battery is mounted…. but you guys never even really talked about that at all which is very strange.
25:50 Basically, it’s like a Ice Skating dancer, when he stretches his arms he spins slowly, and the closer he pulls his arms to his body (the center of mass) he starts to spin faster, the same principlee. I think lol
When talking about the different frame styles, takes me back to my days of archery, where a long rod (stabiliser) with weights on the end would effectively slow down your movement of the bow when aiming, more weight as long as your strength and endurance can handle it mean’t essentially aiming became less twitchy and easier to hold on target.
Same physics principle regarding arm length and stretched X frames etc.
You guys are such nerds… I love this channel!
for durability, you should have asked cricket ??.
the guys with beard are not giving the boy time to talk. Captain bring fake beard next time.
YES around 13 minutes in the guy talks about how efficiency. I recently took my 3 inch down from 3052’s to 3028’s thinking i’d get more battery life, and instead what happened is that I got A LOT LESS battery life! I needed more throttle to hover, the motors had to spin much faster, I even had to increase filtering because the motors were getting too hot. It was very surprising but in the end made a lot of sense.
I disagree with everything everyone said in this video. I’m That Guy.
So to summarise the difference is basically the energy required to change the momentum of the quad-copter, the faster you change the state the less efficient it becomes but in certain applications you need a faster state change so its about optimising the energy required to do that.
Zach I would go with your quad
ask Zoe
(IF YOUR NEW) Stick time will make a better pilot out of anyone? Don’t be fooled, shiny things don’t make us better, they only make us stand out.. and if our skill are subpar than it makes our poor skill shine…
and here i am building 3d Freestyl quads with 500g
Excellent discussion, thanks guys!
It’s nice to see people get really animated and excited about flying… I think I’m going to gravitate to wherever I find the excitement going on… because that’s where the action and innovation is happening.

Has one ever use a light drone and add weight if they need to or counterweight the drone? Also can you talk about weigh balance?
Awesome discussion guys, It is an educational experience from some of the best FPV pilots out there! LTRIP!™
When I race I put a brick on mine with electrical tape..man does it make a difference ??
Racer Dude in the middle is cringing at all these heavier frames on certain tracks discussion?
i watch this vid in 2019 and i believe what the world champ said about racing quad
When is your camp coming to San Francisco
Greetings!!!…will this specs match with that of a race quad…my sole purpose behind creation mixed flying style when necessary…my specs are:-
1) Frame – Foxfly EGG 135 mm X form 3 mm arm.
2) Tx and Rx – Flysky FS i6 Tx and FS Ia6 Rx.
3) Motors + Props– Aurora D1306 3750KV and Gemfan Flash 3052 3 blade props with 5 mm mounting hole
4) Camera – Caddx Turbo EOS 2 1200 TVL 2.1 MM.
5) FC+ESC+VTx stack – GEPRC STABLE F411 Betaflight OSD.
6) BATTERY – 3S 2200Mah 40C ( I’m concerned with the battery is it low or high powered…pls suggest if necessary)…my weight adds upto 291.1 gms in all.
Your suggestions are welcome!!!! Eagerly waiting for your reply.
old guys: Our math and theories say blah blah blah blah Young kid: Hold my beer old guys
I’m gonna learn something today
100% best vlog loved lots of great tips, lots learned thx rr
How come you guys are never drinking beers man?
At 14:05 Vanover is like aah there he goes again…
Is the shrike frame named after the character in the Hyperion novels?
Momentum of a heavy quad will carry speed better than a little quad. Also glide factor of the belly pan of body can increase float.
Joshua bardwell is important for the fpv multirotor community. I like the guy.
Fantastic video. Thanks for such a great discussion.
okay boomers… ur just bad at flying listen to the zoomer race pilot…
moment of inertia increases by square, while “force” moment is linear. ie a 2x the width comparing only motor weight/position for trust, will yeal 4x of inertian of the original and “only” twice the moment.
Now todays races sucks, make you sick not for public view
