If it used counter rotating props it might be more stable in turns
hey why not make this like F1 push-to-pass button on extra contorller button. Connect those motor to super capacitor, act like real boost motor use like van use he switch on and off.
try contra-rotating, dual rotor, maybe assist mini rotors, some kind of a drone. better have inherent stability, gyro mass disc, than controller secondary stabilization

You could set the turbo at 50% when you roll to make the curves smoother

What’s going on here, this shouldn’t work. I mean it should but not better than just having bigger motors and tilting the quad more. The streams of air are fighting each other and you get torque the FC has to compensate. For making it easier to control this much power I would rather go for 2807 and a servo for tilting the FPV cam.

Try to make it so the extra propeller goes on when the throttle is raised maby to about 80/90% insted of using the switch!
You need to make it auto activate on mid throttle and full throttle. The problem comes when he’s backing off the quad thrust and that gives him no turning ability at top speed. The quad props need to be as fast if not faster just to be able to turn, so if we understand how a quad works you need to increase the thrust to the front props during a a turn not decrease (well some decrease but not as much as normal) the tangential force still applies and that is the culmination of all component tangents. It’s just physics. So adjusting the PIDs for Alex normal flying is what made it crash. Lift the PID rate up for the front props when turning and when you are adjusting roll don’t ad so much negative cause it will want to corkscrew into the ground every single time

I dont know if you guys are gonna read this, but I just wanted to say that I love this direction that rotor riot is going!!! I think the focus on building, wild experimentation, and exploring the niches of what can be done for drones is far more entertaining and captivating than going over various freestyle tricks, compilations, or product reviews. The amount of potential behind what can be done with spinning motors excites me and I hope that you guys bring it further in this direction!!!

DEVISE A FOOT SWITCH that can work in conjunction with the switches on the controller.

Seems to me that is there was difficulty in operating the switches fast enough on the controller at full throttle I would create a FOOT SWITCH to compensate. Perhaps making the ‘boost’ switch a FOOT SWITCH like the foot pedal to the gas when driving a car.***add a second foot switch and enable the pilot to do even more intricate moves at full throttle. ***
Since we’re all used to using a foot pedal since we began driving years ago the speed in which a foot switch could be engaged would be very very quick and natural for the pilot when the quickness becomes necessary. Does that make sense????? please let me know. Thanks

it annoys me that they sold out to dji, its a neat novel product but latency nd just the way the signal cuts out is trash. if your not going far, then im sure its fine but meh
needs a button that detects pressure . the more you push the faster the turbo. its like a mini gas peddle
You need a 6 motor to counter the torque of the 5th motor prop.
I think you need a trigger on your index finger to just throttle the turbo. Like the R2 or L2 of the PlayStation controller
I did this with a TBS discovery in 2014, you had to keep the quad level when using the pusher prop as it rides the conventional quad props like wings..i also put a puller on the front but that just didn’t work well. ?
On 30th December 2020 at 10:00 AM, I had the idea to add a propeller at the back of a quad, at 8:00 PM, I discovered this video, and it works pretty well ! Well done guys, and good position of the push vector going through the gravity center. Next improvement can be to put 2 propellers running in opposite (cw ccw) to avoid torque effect and power consumption to compensate it.
Man, man, how fast that goes. I’ve never seen this before. But it also happens quickly when things go wrong.
With an acceleration sensor you could measure the acceleration, and then adjust the angle of the turbo propeller with an extra servo.
I hope that with this idea I can contribute to the solution of the problem.

you can move the fifth motor to the center of arms’s X. it’ll give less torque to the frame

Maybe make it so when a certain amount of pitch and roll is reached it will kick it to 50%, otherwise 100%??? Not sure if it is possible, but that seems like it would make it feel more like a “normal” quad. Super cool regardless, can’t wait to see if you guys do something else with it in the future.
Maybe you could program the flight controller to turn off gradually the turbo depending on how much you turn, but I’m no expert.
I am new to drones but I think this Idea might help …Integrate the turbo with a sideways swing mechanism to kind of boost it in the opposite direction of turn and the back end will turn pretty better and also don’t need to flip the switches .Just an idea
I recall that in the early days of drone flying there was a drone made with a pusher prop named the “Screamer”.
two things.. maybe try adjusting the angle with a servo automatically based on quad tilt and second, make a mode where it adjusts throtle based on roll input (no roll = full boost etc)

pemtacopters have been around a while, I built one once that used a nitro motor, (it did not turn out well in the end) I have been looking for a new pentacopter build but, I have not found any around anymore. I setup like yours would be perfect for wing chasing or the new laser tag system as it seams to mimic some characteristics of a fixed wing craft.
Could you perhaps sell the 5th motor setup? I have to chase Shelby Voll and so far no quad has been able to do it. I am going to put the 5th motor throttle on a peddle to give full motion.

I suspect that the quad is hard to turn while the “turbo” is engaged due to the gyroscopic tendency of the 5th motor to remain rigid in space.

You need a push rod link to tilt the camera with the rear motor so they both stay parallel as the speed increases. Could possibly just use springs for a lightweight assembly and simply rely upon the force of the rear motor to compress said springs in relation to the forward momentum. Ijs
Yo!! Y’all are crazy nice. I’m a RC car guy. I use servo mixing to add brake when I turn the wheel of my RC truck. Mix the turbo motor with the throttle stick position. Use the switch to toggle the turbo on or off. More throttle, more turbo… Less throttle, less turbo for the turns. Wire the fifth motor in series with the others for thrust. The current stays the same. That should do it. Hope that helps and Good luck!

Can you set up a pedal to control the fifth motor? Just like using the gas pedal on a car.
why dont you try edit settings when u push stick forward it kick on boost half when push full it kick on full boost so dont have to use stick turn on n off

Most likely off the battery directly, probably off of the ESC battery input pads. The 5v supply can’t source nearly enough current to run a motor, and the voltage is too low to be useful on something of that scale if it could.

I don’t think you can do anything ‘wrong’ per se when flying a turbo quad for the first time, especially considering the only casualty was a steel bar and not someone ending up in the hospital 🙂 That was incredible, nice flying and amazing build!
All you need is a controller that will gimbal the thrust level to the ground.
What if you stuck a servo in there to keep the 5th prop level so you would always have only a horizontal thrust vector?

You should hook it up in parallel with one of the rear motor controller outputs, and use a transistor so that it only kicks on past a certain throttle level. That way, the fan will kick on for the straight aways and the speed will scale with the rear motor, then it will kick off when you let off the throttle. Also, add a servo to the fan and a gyro sensor, and make the angle of the fan match the angle of the quad. This whole thing can be done with no coding if you’re electrically savvy, or you can power a tiny arduino and code it yourself. It would be crazy simple to code and wire correctly
Why don’t you guys use two sets of motors on each arm apposite each other . Reverse the rear set. You’ll have 8 motors thrusting the same direction
Pedal support for controllers?
Try to place the 5th propeller just below the bottom plate to push the drone below the drone. When the drone advances, it will push it even harder. The 4 propellers will pull it and the one below will push. ????
Integrated throttle is a great idea and maybe have the pusher motor gimbal left and right with yaw inputs to help smooth out cornering.

The booster would need to have a yaw and pitch function for it to work, and even then, the momentum would be carried a lot further making it harder to do sharp turns and flips. Boosters are good for moving straight. That’s about it.
When the boost is “off”, U need to precisely control the boost RPM slow enough so it matches the oncoming airstream. The idea is to zero out the drag while maneuvering. If you could do it perfectly, which I have no idea how you would, it would have zero effect on maneuverability yet still provide the boost in forward speed. Or simply just keep it turning at idle speeds always because a stopped propeller is a huge drag aerodynamically.
Another thought I have is that the main props would act as wings when the rear motor is on since it would be pushing it beyond the speed of the air flowing through just the main props. With the forward angle of attack, that’s going to push you down and require more power to maintain altitude. That’s a lot of wasted energy. If you’re going fast enough with boost, but using a level angle of attack, I think you would find it flies like an airplane since the main props effectively become wings. Would love to see you experiment with that one.

I would have said to attach the motor to the back of the frame parallel to the frame. On that setup, the 5th motor was lower. Raise it up so it is all one sleek box.

Put it on a foot pedal. Replace one of your switches with a headphone jack, then use a cheap piano foot pedal as the toggle switch (they plug into headphone jacks usually). Like a gas pedal while flying.
put it on a slider like Bardwell
which means, we can use a thinner frame to save weight since that big speed would not be normally reached.
At 61 this year, I can add pro drone pilot to the list of things I’m too old and slow for.
The motor should have been like a NOS system where it is only on while a button is held down, preferably one that can be hit on the back of the TX with unused fingers like the pinky or something. That is my opinion anyway!
