In today’s video I 3D printed the Peon230 frame from Thingiverse, a FPV racing quadcopter frame. I was curious to know if PLA plastic would be tough enough to be used as a fast flying drone frame. I loved doing this video, and I hope you will enjoy watching it!

lost my sj4000wifi in a field in january(2016), it was found in march(2016), the kids who found it turned it on and it autorecorded them finding it as the battery still had charge, it had water trapped in the lens not a great video and the audio was also muffled, stripped cleaned new lens and put back into use. i’ll buy sj everytime now.

Have you tried heat treating your PLA plastic? Thomas Salander did it back in 2016 and had exceptionel good results with PLA plastic. (Link to video from Thomas Salander: )

Hi there I think your the guy to potentially build a prototype winch system for a drone.
I intend to run a fast food takeaway selling Fish.
Now it makes logical sense to have a fleet of drones delivering my delicious food.
I have looked the Legals and there seem to be no major restrictions to using drones other than the obvious licence required
and the relevant flying skills which you will be trained to a level on a 3 day course costing £800-£1200 in UK.#
Now this cost is nothing when you compare the costs/problems incurred by a conventional take away….human traffic/insurance/
traffic jams/sickness /maintanence etc etc the list goes on.
I have seen a drone developed by DelivAir in the UK (Cambridge) please Check it out as this is the concept I want to cost slash by 3d printing the Winch delivery mechanism and make it connect to the drone of my choice, DJI Mavik for e.g.
Not only would it be amazing to print and build your own drone but build an amazing drop winch system that would
fly my drone to the intended client via an App on their phone…hover at a Legal safe height i think its 30ft….lock onto the phone signal….open a 3d printed housing unit attatched to my drone…winch down my food attatched to a winch/fishing line….. customer never comes into contact with the drone,unclips the food package…..winch/tether line returns to the drones housing unit and returns to base……Poetry in motion my friend.
I think this approach would give a lot more flexibility to the delivery Idea.

you should do 3DxTech’s glass fiber reinforced PETG. Glass fiber is what is used to strengthen tool plastic.
Going to make one by frankinstineing a cheap Syma drone & putting better motors onto it. Cheap, replaceable parts is a plus, but cheap quality is a minus.

try ABS next time!
the down side is ABS is generally softer as a new print in comparisons with PLA 🙂
but it withstand moist better since PLA is a form of bio-plasic.
you could try laccase to make PLA water prove

i print it too. it works but PLA ist not temperature resistent and the motors glow into the plastic. i print it with ABS and build a PLA support because ABS was to flexible and the
vibrations… .Now it work pretty well and have a lot of power. Great video

Good watch mate! Good to see a 3d printer actually get used. Mine is on it’s way and I have parts stacked up in Fusion ready to go. Good to get some confirmation that 3d parts are at least usable. Not just for printing fingerings, why do people print those things??

Thats the problem if there is no knowlegde of physics and mechanics … more stiffness already can be get by a higher profile of the arms … they wont weight more if the walls are thinner, anyway i will gain more stiffness … easy beasy …

I am interested in building one but i am new to this technology. I am a electronics engineer and know that all this stuff is not created equal. I have had some experience with gearbest but was only some what satisfied with the stuff I bought. Could you list the parts used in the video. Do you know if there is better and or cheaper stuff available?

Why not ABS or HIPS? The HIPS has it literally in the name.. High Impact PolyStyrene
It is mostly known as a Dissolvable material (but only in kind of exotic exotic solvents), but it is so much more.. it prints great, has great mechanical properties and is VERY cheap. A great alternative to ABS as a general purpose printing material.

There have been issues like your wobbling before on non 3D printed quads. It could be vibration feedback coming into the FC and it trying to compensate for it. Idk if you have done this before, but try putting a single O-Ring under each of the posts for the boards so it absorbs some of the vibrations. Great vid though!

I’m sure you had the vibration before. PETG is shitty and flexible as hell. ABS is lighter and stronger. Nylon would be the best. Infill doesn’t help your strength much either. More walls/perimeters will help the strength more.

I heard baking PLA parts will strength them. Protopasta, the filament manufacture , recommends it as of last year. There may be a better way

Here is an Idea, heat the wrapped parts with a heat gun, not only will this melt it a little depending on the heat making it a semi solid piece, but you can also clap the flexible PLA slightly to help reduce the bend.

You need to boil (Heat Treat) your PLA after printing to strengthen them! Look up Heat Treating PLA on Youtube.

The design of the 3d printed parts could be way better. If you just make these parts as flat as they are, you‘re better off making them out of carbon fiber sheets.

Racers usually bottom mount their battery so they can turn faster because of gravity or some other sht

Why do you need them. It’s not like it’s nesscesary to have them. Your probably gonna throw them away
You can also reinforce with strips of cotton brushed with resin. Really stiff strong, and light weight, as long as you don’t use too much resin. Similar to fiberglass, i think it’s called micarta.

Easy solution, just print it all in one and use a brim for built plate adhesion. Obviously you’d have to design your own but that’s fun.
