A failing ESC doesn’t always mean your quad falls out of the sky in a death-roll. When an ESC has just one bad FET, it can cause weak motor response that flies fine most of the time… except when you go to full throttle. In this video, I’ll show you exactly what that looks like, including blackbox traces and stick overlay.

The ESC that I’m using in this video is the DALRC Engine, which I have had two out of two of them die on me after way too short a time so I’m not linking to them. Instead you should buy the Aikon AK32.

Was there a difference in motor temperature? I read through quite a few comments but I didn’t see that anyone ask.
WOW………… just bought a new set of motors because of this……oh well esc’s are cheap but the hypetrains weren’t.
Isn’t there a way to find out if the ESC is bad by checking for continuity of each mosfet? Continuity means a bad mosfet.
Had a quite similar looking blackbox log, but it was the motor! After changing th motor everything was ok again. But you are right, it is a hardware issue and it can be only the motor, the ESC or the FC.
I’ve had the exact issue on my spare quad for a while now haven’t been able to pinpoint it till now thanks for the video helped alot!
Hey i see that CV module! Do a review so we can see how it is now
Omg this was the video I need same thing been happening to me
I had one troubled kwad with similar problem. ESC and motor appeared to be ok after i swapped them around the kwad. And the problem was… ta-da… BAD SIGNAL WIRE! even not the wire itself (I had Matek F405-CTR) but the circuit board track inside the CTR…
I have a bad nose dip issue on 3.5 rc2 and 3.4. could a bad ESC cause it to dip the nose when you add throttle quickly? Have tried everything to tune it out changing TPA and pids even had anti-gravity up to 16 Nothing Stops the dip, all new features on jbf4, rooster, Hyperlite 2405-2522, spedix es30hv, dshot600,BF config 10.4?
Thanks Joshua. I get the same thing on one of my builds (sporadicly) the motor is at 100% while the quad is rotating at 1400*/sec in the opposing direction, it keeps my on my toes.
I also have had two DALRC Engine’s where an individual channel goes out. 1st one only took about 2 minutes into the flight before a channel completely died. RDQ was awesome and replaced it for free. Second one I flew for about 3 months before another channel started having causing the motor to create a lot of noise.
Darn I was hoping this was my problem. I have a quad that on throttle blips makes like a rattling oscillation type noise and I was wondering if it is a bad esc or motor???
Things like this are a big part of why i stopped flying, was spending more time fiddling with it to get it to fly decently than i was actually flying. Bad parts, untuneable setups, poor camera quallity and poor control/video range. Upgrading my hardware made a small improvement but nowhere near where i wanted it to be. Would love to get back into rc flying, but as far as i can see, barely anything changed over the last 2 years.
how do you know its a bad esc and not just your flying?
This is the story of my life. Both my quads are doing this to varying extents. The one gave up the ghost yesterday.
Is there anything that can damage the ESC’s that could bring on this behaviour?
I’ve had this problem many times and know it all too well. My question to you is how bad would it be for the motor (or anything else) to keep flying on it just for the day as long as the motor isn’t getting hot? Let’s say you bring 20 packs out for the day and you cruise out the rest of your packs until you get home to fix it. Would this kill a motor? I did this today and kept checking the motors and they weren’t hot. But if its going to destroy something I’ll never do it again
Hello, Can you share some BlackBox logs? Bad and good ones for comparison. It would be very helpful.
How do you log the stick inputs?
Great video! Awesome help….I guess occasionally blackboxing my birds is a good idea. Never done it, I will soon
Hey joshua, thank you for all the hard work you put in your channel. You’ve helped me a LOT over my last few months. Can you tell me how to differentiate between a failing esc and a failing motor?

Great info buddy. I’ll look out for that. Thanks josh.
Hi JB
I like your stuff very much. Just wanted to say this by occasion…
I had the exact same issue. On one kwad i changed the supposingly bad ESC and it it was gone. A few flights later an other motor had the same behaviour. An other kwad had no strange behaviour in flight, but analysing blackbox data, it looked the same.
Changing all PWM settings from 48kHz to 24kHz solved the problem! Strange!?
so i did a blackbox run with my quad with issue that has sputter only from 70% and up and it looks like 1 and 3 motor show to hit 100% before the others do.. ive got blheli32 dys aria single escs should i replace the two rears and test again? who could and how could i send my blackbox to so they could help with this? would it be something you could do if u have time?
Its probably the bobba fet
Hi joshua, check my vid. Do you think it may be a motor issue? I have this issue from few days
Nyeeeeeeeeeee
I have the very same issue. Not sure if it’s the motor or an ESC, but I do see a small fried capacitor on the ESC so that could just be it.
My quad corner dips, motor number one either stop spinning in mid flight or just won’t speed up enough in takeoff. I have replaced the motor with a good motor from my 2nd quad. still no fix, so then I replaced the escs still no fix. Now, even weirder, when I put the new motor back to my 2nd quad, same thing happens to both quads. Now both quads have desync what the hell?????? Anyone can please help me is it the flight controller or something with Dshot or maybe not a good electrical contact??? Or I damaged electronics during soldering. I don’t FREKIN know I’m sorry stuck please if anyone knows and can help me please reply
