I was a bit to ambitious and pushed the limit of the Iris. Lost full power on descent and made a hard landing resulting in some broken legs and arms. No other serious damage.

Did you do this FPV or a Mission??
Mission. I want to get an FPV device that will work with my GoPro. Do you
have any recommendations?
+flyboyMaxwell Thanks for the info. What type of range can you get out of
it? Is it able to transmit even once the iris transmitter cuts out of
longer missions?
+Nick Madore Depends on what type of gopro you use some use a differen’t
conector. The Hero 3 use a usb plug the Hero 2 and 1 use a headphone type
of plug or plug into the adapter plug in the back.
lol probably a little fixin after that
Broke all 4 long legs. 3 props, two arms and dislodged the antenna.
Possibly more damage but I haven’t taken the body apart. Could have been a
lot worse!
Ya no kidding ….I find the long legs have a weak point where it connects
to the arms ….I broke one the other day had an accident where I hit the
wrong switch and did not realize it was trying to rtl lol flew right into
my house hahah killed one leg and 3 blades but other than that not much
else ….was back up flying in 20 mins ….need to order a few spare parts
in the event it ever happens again.
+Curtis Wazny Yeah I noticed that too. It’s probably a good idea to tighten
it with pliers. I wonder though if its done on purpose. Having “breakaway”
legs might lessen the damage to the arms and the rest of the body in a
hard crash.
+Curtis Wazny I did that too Curtis.. twice on the same arm now.. but fixed
it both times with superglue and its holding like a champ.. easily 25
flights on a rigged arm/leg weld 🙂

Are you using the Tarot gimbal or fixed mount in this video?
Fixed mounted. I have the tarot but haven’t mounted it yet. Good thing I
didn’t on this flight or it would have been toast.
Where did you buy the iris? My DJI Phantom 2 flew away and I am leaning
towards the Iris.

Were you using stock TX with telemetry to see how far you climbed. I wonder
if your powered cut out because your battery was all used up. All I can get
out of a flight is about 8 minutes in 30 degree weather with that crappy
stock battery.
Yeah it’s all stock. I thought the battery would get me around 10 mins but
with the wind and cold it was less.
Obviously you’re not in the US (400 ft legal limit). And broken arms is not
minor stuff, that’s serious.
It was an easy fix to replace. Just had to remove the broken legs and
resolder the wires. I won’t be trying that again tho.
not really a legal limit if they can’t enforce it.
+Nick Madore I had the same problem and to replace the legs is a little
difficult because there is no connectors to make it easier….In my case,
I`ll try install connectors instead resold the wires…My cousin is an
electrical engineer and I called him to help me…..
nice flight… I guess you were fortunate it came down in a clearing or did
it have a GPS controller to make that happen..thanks
Very lucky. I could hear it coming down before I saw it then when it
appeared I new the general direction it crashed but I wasn’t sure exactly.
It took about 20 mins of walking in the snow before I found it.
lol Nick… nice run. It didn’t sound too weak on the way down, it was
weird how it was spinning.. I guess it was underpowered.
I’m just guessing but he was probably holding the stick a little off center
when he was bringing it back down.
+Bill Roberts It was a complete autopilot flight just after lift off. The
battery was drained so much that it couldn’t properly descend.
+Nick Madore That was my thought, you had been climbing for over 9 full min
when it said to hell with this… that would have been a good time to have
one of those ballistic parachutes.. 🙂
Dude i can just imagine how bad that was omg
At one point I accepted the fact that I would probably never see it again.
What has been the lowest temperature that you have tried the IRIS on?
I flew mine today at about 32 F, with gimbal and got a full 15 minutes.
I NEED THIS FOR CHRISTMAS!! LOL!!!!
I was wondering how high these could go. Well this really answers that
question for me. More than enough! Impressed. I really want one of these
going this high is illegal in the U.S., where the limit is 400 feet for the
safety of aircraft.
+cspj12 Yup your right. Luckily I’m not in the US.
It’s worth it. Really fun but it can become an expensive hobby.
+Nick Madore Yeah it’s also very time consuming. In a few years you may be
able to spend more time flying and less time calibrating things. Then
again, maybe not!
why did you loose power
Why the hard landing? Pilot or auto pilot error?
The battery didn’t have enough juice.
Looks like a km to me at least 2000-3000ft, if not don’t have any doubts
about achieving 1KM+. Love my IRIS+
looks like michigan?
Could you please explain how can you avoid attitude limit 100m? Because my
drone stops at this attitude. Thanks.
+dandbincorp You can remove the geofencing manually.
Hello! Nice video, great 3Dr Iris introduction .. I am planning to bild new
quadcopter with “follow me ” feature (this is only reason to use 3DR
cotroller, Ilike NAZA better) So..please help me to selekt right parts:
1.Pixhawk PX4 2.4.5 or PX42.4.6 or only PX4-kit-0011 good enough for
“follow me’? or all of them upgratable?
2. Wich one u-blox GPS I have to buy: Neo6 or Neo7M or only NeoM8N or only
new square one???
3.Radio set- no questions…
Thank You in advance, Roman
Just great
Thanks, good video. If you are flying a programmed mission with way points
on board, can you fly beyond the range of the transmitter or is the mission
limited to a boundary within the transmitter range?
Just FYI: If this was within the U.S., there’s an FAA 400′ AGL (above
ground level) altitude limit for this class of UAV. So, operating in what
is called “controlled airspace” (above 400′ AGL) is actually breaking
federal law. Now, I haven’t heard of anyone getting busted by the Feds for
doing this, but if by some small chance you happen to cause interference,
damage or accident to an airplane or a helicopter, you’re going to be very
heavily fined and/or go to prison.
