I’ve had this idea for a while of a drone that could be used as a quick personal transport. of the manned drones I’ve seen so far, this one has to be the coolest. I really like what they did with the bodywork. My main concern is the safety considering if the power fails it will just fall, and the props aren’t large enough to autorotate down slowly like a helicopter. I’m thinking maybe some kind of airbag system could make it safer for pilots to soften the landing since it is generally too low for parachutes

I was the USAF first Chief of Technology for the USAF Unmanned Aerial Vehicle program. An aerial vehicle that is unmanned is called a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). UAVs almost always require some kind of ground controllers. When you include those, the collection is called a UAS (Unmanned Aerial System). A UAV that is intended to be shot down as an aerial target is referred to as a drone.

So, this is not a drone. Since it is designed to have a man inside, it’s not ‘unmanned’. So, it’s just an aircraft.

Many people think if it has multiple downward facing rotors, that’s a ‘drone’. They’d be wrong.

My understanding here is that this vehicle/system doesn’t require a human on board to operate. The vehicle is operated/controlled by an operator on the ground, regardless of whether there is a person, a mannequin, or a bag of sand contained within the body of the aircraft. Therefore, I guess you could say this is a UAS.

5:52 – This is where conventional pilot training would have save some parts. After taxi to a safe location to do a runup and before run-up you do a ‘controls free and CORRECT’ step. I’ve taken this habit over into flying quads, and it’s saved me several times – like when you flash betaflight with the orientation 90 degrees to what it should be. After you arm, leave the throttle at minimum and check roll pitch and yaw to make sure the right motors spin up for each of them. Admittedly, he probably would have done this subconsciously if he was sitting in the aircraft.

And yeah – flying with my CFI and doing unusual attitude recovery with the hood on was one of the funnest parts of my PPL.

Why would you use a F1 monocoque as a chassis? Its not exactly aviation weight. Those chassis are designed to withstand high impacts and are super strong. I am confused why they think this is the right strength to weight solution for flight? Some parts of that monocoque structure are super thick and even though it is carbon fibre, its crazy heavy in those areas compared to an aluminium thin skin and skeletal structure. Nit criticizing, just curious why they would choose that as their base to work around. You then need to create extra lift to get the total mass off the ground.
