So I was out running the other day and i had this crazy idea – what if I could take some components that I had lying around and make a drone that could run off of 12s, instead of just the measly 6s that they currently run on. I wasn’t sure whether or not it would work, and I knew there would definitely be challenges to making it not blow up on 12 cell voltage (that’s 50v). It turned out absolutely insane and I’m stoked to share it with you!

doing a quick math a 5 inch prop at 15000 rpm is almost 0.8 mach at the props tips, that is the most efficient point, beyond that you need exponential power to gain more speed, becouse drag increases exponentially too, and not taking in account that for going faster the kwad fuselage has to tilt increasing the frontal area and creating more drag, and in certain point prop will explode, theres no so much real gain in speed, thats why almost no propeller aircraft could breake sound barrier too,the only bad ass thing with that setup is acceleration

If we ever figure out variable pitch props, drones will be 400+ miles an hour.
What pwms did u use and also @ 7:30 you can use a (BEC) a batter eliminator circuit, And you can just keep one batt to power everything…and/or Buck converter/step down module in conjunction with PDB.

So, I did 800kv x 50v which gives you potential 40000 rpm if my maths is correct.
My 2.5″ quad as a comparison, runs 6000kv motors running 3s. Works out at a potential 75000 rpm on a fully charged lipo.
So you are not actually getting crazy high prop speeds. To get some real over the top gains surely you want to up the kv a bit as that will give you the higher head speeds?

As someone who has only just picked up a second hand Yuneec Q500 GPS based drone, and therefore knows very little about drones, how critical is mm perfect battery placement, weight distribution and the centre of gravity on how these things fly?

I’m Lost if its 12s its only 44 volts…. But why would you even put 12s on a 3 blade 4 inch prop mini copter lol? There low Kv motors as well! Not like there heavy lifting. Your 6s build had more power/ speed tot he blades compared to this. Now if you had like 4 turn 4500Kv motors @ 12s that would be funny and also rip the blades off from just pure force. Why not extend the arms slightly and add like 6 inch Cf props. That thing would cook . Not trying to bash yeah! I have some rather large drones. In the 24 inch blade range I use to take Arial videos for logging and flooded areas when asked. “commercially” Running 12s systems on two drones with 250kv motors. @ 6x 24 inch props 16degree pitch I can fly 5dsl cameras for about 45 minutes 20,000 packs. Just saying that purpose it makes sense! for a slow tinny build puzzled! Get some dental drill motors on that @ 12s lol!

What would it cost for someone who wants to get into drone racing like a basic beginner set up?
the sound is just a result of the rpm. you can fit a higher kv motor and run it at lower V and get the same sound. p=iv. i and v are proportional to power so its all the same. that being said if u are running any of your components at or near rated max then they wont last long and will be losing a whole bunch of energy in heat.
