I consider 1 foot a near miss just too much fear mongering. The Ticks you seen were full of blood so they probably just dropped off . Dealt with them on dogs.
I think the rules need to change a little. Since drone operators are considered pilots in Canadian airspace and have to obtain an operator certificate in order to fly, they should not always be seen as at fault if they follow all procedures and a manned aircraft pilot causes an issue. There are many manned aircraft pilots who do not properly follow the rules and regulations. There was a pilot in the area I live who lost his licence years back for doing stupid things. Yet, today, if he collided with a drone while doing something stupid, the drone operator would be at fault, even if the drone operator followed all the rules and procedures.
Heli pilot should have observed his or her notams before flight just as reviewing the weather conditions for the duration of their flight. But then again, just as regulations state for unmanned aircraft, we are to give way to manned aircraft. So, no one wins. Fill out the incident paperwork and be done with the day.
I live in Halfmoon Bay, and we regularly have manned aircraft pilots buzzing our residential area well under 1000ft (classed as such) to take in the scenery. The regulations are BS. Approximately 400 million spent on bird strike repairs to manned aircraft on the planet each year….almost nothing spent on drone strikes….time to regulate birds I think.
That operator may face prosecution. If his spotter saw the Heli he had time to react
If you cant avoid a big ass helicopter with even the crappiest drone on horizon your not an actual drone pilot. Your a guy with a gps and a phone and no skill. I would do a few orbits around him and some matty flips to piss him off for flying in my airspace. see how he likes that. He should have put it in acro and got some sick shots of the chopper.
I just happened upon your video on Youtube today about the incident in Glenwood New Brunswick just outside Saint John New Brunswick. I was the Drone Pilots Visual Observer (Spotter) for the flight that was Piloted by James Turnbull. I just wanted to clarify a couple of points. As mentioned in your Video, you said that the spotter (me) had notified the Drone pilot of a helicopter that had entered into our area. Just so you and your viewer know, the Drone was flying at an elevation of 185 AGL and of course my eyes are on the Drone and the Surrounding Area. The helicopter suddenly appeared just above the water and yes I heard engines but thought they must be coming from a boat entering the wharf area., when I had noticed the Helicopter fly directly under the drone probably between 80 and 100 feet AGL to my estimate. The Pilot in my mind did actually what he should have done and that was let the Drone Hover as opposed to direct the Drone back to our operation area. The Helicopter was travelling at a very fast speed and was making a 30 degree turn in a clockwise direction which actually was in the same pattern as our flight plan. As the helicopter was making its turn it had to immediately change its altitude as the land went up and there were some very tall trees in his path. By the time he made his clockwise 30 degree turn and came again in contact with the drone but this time was at about 300 feet AGL and then carried on in a WSW direction. It was mentioned in the article that we should have been able to get a picture of the Helicopter but that was virtually impossible as the Helicopter was below the Drone and the Helicopter had its belly facing towards the South as it was making its 30 degree turn.
It was reported to us after the incident that the same Helicopter had been seen earlier in the Day up river in the Belleisle area flying at about 30 feet above the water with boats in the river at the time.
I strongly support Mr. Turnbull’s decision to stay put and to hover until he could get a sense of where the Helicopter was going. I do believe the pilot of the Helicopter did notice the Drone as he conducted his clockwise turn and had changed his altitude to 300 ft. The event was very well planned and safety measures where put into place by Mr. Turnbull and myself so as to ensure that there would not be any unfortunate events during the great fund raising event that was hosted by the Bruces for the 7th time. The family was successful in obtaining their goal to raise enough money to allow a scholarship to be given in the name of their daughter to a deserving student at UNB for many years to come as it had become self funding. Thank you.
