NEVER DO THIS with your drone
I took my DJI spark for a flight above the clouds at high altitude…. erm, no I didn’t! There was a thick but shallow fog blanket over Edinburgh. I thought I’d sneak above for a look, but the drone downward facing sensors stopped the descent once it hit the fog blanket, and i almost ran out of battery. Still, DJI makes incredible drones and this is by far and away my favourite piece of technology i’ve ever bought.
@ Shaun: since Spark manages perfectly by night without help of any vision sensor, I suppose one solution would be to put some black tape on the bottom sensors for such “cloud mission” ;-)….
Thanks for the heads-up. Very informative video!!!
Who’d have thought ☁ cloud would have set off the downward sensor. Thanks for the waring..

BTW – so glad your drone made it. When I was a teenager in Austin, TX, there was a comic book protagonist (Oat Willie) whose motto was, “Onward through the fog!” ()
HI Shaun, great video. I was wondering could you have flown it inverted to bypass the obstacle sensors ?
Would never have considered that as a problem so cool for sharing!! Many thanks from England 🙂
Drone Everything!
Unrelaited question, how do you like your haggis? Boiled, fried, baked? I like mine breaded and fried
On the mavic you can turn the senors off
It should have an override and better yet, have technology such that it knows where it is relative to the ground topology, meaning GPS. You should look up Ken Domik on You Tube. He’s been working with drones for a while and it is pretty savvy.
@shaun, I understand not taking the risk a second time… BUT… I think it was worth it because you cought images from the fog within and they are amazing (and you didn’t lose the drone)
Holy crap!I would have had a fit!!!
Call your videos about all your camera, drone, ect stuff ” ShaunTech Vlogs” or something similar. That way everybody will know that those specific videos are about that. Same youtube channel…just a different series of videos!?
My mates did the same but at a higher altertude and in the clouds it was full on panic it didn’t decend till the battery warning
Was on it got to about 30 feet and fell in the long grass and was ok.
The same thing happened to me today, but with far worse altitude to get to the crazy slow descent from. It did this while at 500m. Drained battery to 0 at 320 metres, I didnt even see the fall but found it in a field 100 metres away. Surprisingly, it survived and works! Will never do this again tho. Panic attacks!!!
You can turn all the sensors off you know ?
Edinburgh is such a beautiful city. Thats where i decided to be an architect. Obviously i love droning too, glad you got your drone back safely
Have the same issue in fog when I flew from my balcony. Before I watched your video I thought it’s about i turn on my drone inside my room before flight, now I know this problem with landing is caused by fog
